Meet Our Volunteers - Stewart's Story
From time to time we like to highlight the extraordinary efforts of volunteers who make our work possible. These individuals give of their time and talent to improve Housing, Health, and Hope in St. Louis.
|
Our Cooper House staff work daily to improve the lives of our residents and help them gain independence. With that said, the road to good health takes time. While our residents understand the long journey ahead, the desire to work and feel accomplished is always present.
This yearning is especially deep in Cooper House resident Stewart. Stewart worked over 15 years in manufacturing, where he produced and sold items needed for letterman jackets throughout Missouri. Now a four-year Cooper House resident, Stewart wants to get back to work.
Through the assistance of Social Worker Allison Givens, Stewart started participating in DOORWAYS' volunteer program. Stewart was placed in our Own Home Department to see if he liked the day-to-day routine. Since the start, Stewart has thrived.
"Not being able to work can be really difficult and it can make you crazy," Stewart said. "Being able to volunteer and fill my time with something constructive has helped me feel good."
Stewart hopes to expand his role in the volunteer program over the next year. He also hopes to develop his guitar playing and song writing skills.

Thank You for Making the Holidays Bright
Santa and his elves visited the Residential Program distributing gifts and merriment to all residents and their families in December. Pictured with Santa are Julian and Julia.
A big thank you to everyone who adopted residents and provided presents over the holidays. You helped make their holiday special and we appreciate you!

Promoting From Within
D
OORWAYS has always taken great pride in its staff and has a proud tradition of promoting from within (just ask our President/CEO). This tradition carries on with three promotions of staff members who are excelling:
Shawn White
was promoted to our Maintenance Technician position in December. Shawn has been with DOORWAYS for almost a decade, where he has served first as a Resident Advocate and then as a Building and Grounds Specialist. Shawn is now a member of our maintenance team where he up-keeps many of our properties and works every day to keep our residents safe.
Clarice Lipsey
has been at DOORWAYS for less than a year and has already received a promotion. Clarice began as an intern in 2014 before joining our Residential Program full-time in 2016 as the program assistant. She is now our Client Service Coordinator where she works to provide resources and programming at each of our properties.
David Payne
will now start his third role with DOORWAYS. David began as our Activity Coordinator at Cooper House in 2015 before joining our Own Home Team as a Housing Resource Specialist. David's love of technology and data made him an ideal candidate for our new Data Systems Administrator position. This brand new role will have David compiling data from across the agency to showcase the outcomes of our programs. He begins this position in late January.
