September 2016 Newsletter
Here's How!

As far as the upcoming events in September are concerned, we are happy to be featuring a talk about the crime in San Francisco in the 1920s. We are also excited to be hosting again the jazz trio Nick Rossi and his Moderne Men. And of course we will be seeing many of you at the Art Deco Society of California's annual Gatsby Summer Afternoon.

We are also pleased to put In the Spotlight a very special Kickstarter campaign, whose mission will be to affix a classic streamline neon "Cocktails" sign of the corner of our building. The plan is to launch the Kickstarter in October, so stay tuned! Contact Aaron or Solario for more information!

In Stookey's Ps & Qs, we reflect on the activities in August: the Cuban photography exhibit by Jonathan Wiggins and the Between the World Wars presentation on Fashion with Paul Gallo and Rose Ellis. We thank them for their contributions. Lastly, we highlight our September cocktail, "Jasper's Jamaican Rum Punch".

By the way, we are always looking for new ideas for lectures and presentations of a historical and/or cultural nature. If you know somebody who you think has knowledge or perspective on an interesting topic, please email Leslie.

Please have a look, drop us a line at [email protected] and be sure to swing by for a delicious libation or two!  This month's coupon is a 2 cocktails for $20, so make a note of the secret code and swing on in! See you soon!

Neon "Cocktails"  Sign in the Works

As some of you may have already heard, the Club Moderne team has a plan in the works to erect a classic neon “Cocktails” sign off the corner of the building which is our home. Made out of brushed aluminum and using colbalt neon for the letter and accents, the sign will serve to remind passersby regarding what our true calling is: to serve delicious libations while evoking the style of 1930s San Francisco.

While many local storefronts have allowed their neon signs to fall into disuse and disrepair, we aim to revive a classic look for the Bush Street corridor and set an example for others throughout the city and beyond to follow! If this type of historical restoration is something of interest to you, please take heed of the following:

Kickstarter Campaign Coming Soon!

To realize this dream, we are launching a Kickstarter campaign in early October to raise the necessary funds to pay for the design and construction of this sign!

It should be emphasized that we chose Kickstarter to fund this project for a reason: we want everyone to be absolutely clear that the money raised is to make the neon sign happen. If the campaign does not meet the goal, then no money is collected, and the sign project will not happen. We also want to emphasize that contributions of all kinds come with rewards and privileges at various levels with the completion of a successful Kickstarter. More information regarding rewards and opportunities will be released in the coming weeks. Please stay tuned!

The Sign

Critical to the success of the campaign is the early participation by core supporters of the project. If you find yourself interested in seeing the Club Moderne neon “Cocktails” sign project come to fruition, please email here to contact the team!

Thanks for your support.

Stookey's Ps & Qs

Last month we hosted two events on different Sundays. The first was a fantastic art opening featuring the Cuban photography of Jonathan Wiggins, a neighbor and friend of Stookey's Club Moderne. You see, Jonathan had the opportunity to travel to Cuba earlier this Spring and he was able to capture a good number of fantastic shots!

They are currently on the walls of the bar and will be there for the next few weeks..... Stop on by and check them out if you haven't had a chance to see them yet!

The following Sunday we were honored with a discussion of the history of 20th century Fashion, part two. The title:  Fashion under Attack : The Inspiration & Reality of Fashion During World War II : Before, During & After. (Below is Leslie Cole introducing the speakers).

Paul Gallo, a San Francisco fashion designer and City College of San Francisco Lecturer, started the presentation with a discussion of how fashions evolved after the end of World War I, through the 1920s and into the 30s.

In the second half of the presentation, Anastasia "Rose" Ellis, local historical fashion seller and collector, who specializes in the fashions of the 1940s, gave a really interesting talk about how the build-up to World War II in Europe really affected the trends of women's fashion, in large part due to the fact that fashion ultimately is an outward expression of a society's values. (Rose is on the right, below).
What an interesting and enlightening way to spend a Sunday afternoon! We very much appreciate their willingness to prepare and present this interesting lecture!

We are thrilled to be planning more lectures and events in the coming months... keep on eye on this space!
