Evan Ziporyn

Presenting the US Premiere of his Project for a Revolution in New York (2013) this year's composer-in-residence Evan Ziporyn will join forces with NMD and Bang on a Can All-Stars pianist Vicky Chow during the 8pm and 9pm hours.

"My grandfather owned a bowling alley in Detroit and I spent a lot of time in my early childhood there. I was taken to Tigers and Red Wings games - this was in the Al Kaline years - and somehow managed to get an autographed photo from Gordie Howe. I still have it!

"My grandfather was a serious amateur painter, and I have a memory of going to an outdoor art exhibition with him to show some of his work sometime in the early 1960s. Now I get to come back to 'exhibit' my own art, and that's very moving to me.

"This concert is one of the widest retrospectives of my music to date, bringing together almost 30 years of my work. The oldest piece dates from 1984 and the newest was just completed last month. And somehow doing it in Detroit feels very very right."

Gyan Riley

Brooklyn based guitarist and composer Gyan Riley is frequently heard performing at venues such as Le Poisson Rouge and Barb�s. His recent album of original compositions Stream of Gratitude (2011) garnered him praise as "a highly skilled performer of music that is both deeply personal and profoundly inspired" by New Music Box.

Gyan will showcase his own works for solo guitar during the 7pm hour. During that set he also joins NMD for the audience favorite Smoke (2009) by Marc Mellits.

Eric Copeland

No stranger to Detroit audiences, Eric Copeland (from the acclaimed Brooklyn noise band Black Dice), brings his uncompromising blend of hardcore electronics and off-kilter experimental beats to the MOCAD stage. Hear him perform music from his most recent release, Joke in the Hole (DFA Records).

Latitude 49

Formed in 2012 through their connections to the University of Michigan, Latitude 49 is a young dynamic mixed ensemble chamber group whose performances push boundaries and create unique and charismatic performances.

During the 6pm hour they will perform works by Jennifer Higdon, Marc Mellits, David Lang and more...

From UofM to GVSU

The powerhouse ensembles from Michigan's university scene return this year to bookend Strange Beautiful Music VI. Opening on the 4pm set is the Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble (Bill Ryan, director) performing the Pulitzer Prize winning Double Sextet (2008) by Steve Reich.

Following up on their successful John Cage set from SBM V last year, the University of Michigan Percussion Ensemble (Jonathan Ovalle and Joseph Gramley, directors) returns this year to close out the evening at the 11pm hour.
