10% Campaign
|
The 10% Campaign is a project of the Center For Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS). The campaign encourages you to spend 10% of your existing food dollars to support North Carolina food producers, businesses and communities. Why 10%? In North Carolina, we spend $35 billion on food every year. If we spend 10% of our food dollars on local product, we can infuse over $3.5 billion into the local economy. As avid supporters of the Durham Farmers' Market, you already know the many advantages to shopping locally. So, why join the campaign? It will re-affirm your commitment to shopping locally and it sends a strong message to policy makers about the importance of local foods! For more information visit: www.nc10percent.com |

Spring is in full swing at the Durham Farmers' Market. Strawberries, asparagus, plant starts, and flowers have taken over, and broccoli is making its debut this week.
Tomorrow we will celebrate these wonderful springtime flavors with a Strawberry Salad cooking demonstration at the Info Table. Learn how to put together a simple and delicious Strawberry Salad with locally grown ingredients, and sample a plate for free. This is a recipe the whole family can enjoy, so bring the kids along for a tasty afternoon treat. The demo starts at 3PM and goes until 4PM, or until we run out of strawberries!
See you tomorrow!

Chapel Hill Creamery
We have our Dairyland Farmers cheese, Carolina Moon, and Pheta cheeses this week. Our Dairyland Farmers Cheese is a fresh cheese popular with kids of all ages and it's good for snacking or melting. Try it in a salad of market lettuce, strawberries, and vinaigrette. Or pick up our recipe for Market Salad which has cabbage, carrots, nuts, and raisins. Our Pheta is aged in a salt brine - which is the traditional method - and is saltier than the farmers cheese. Use it for grain salads, pasta, or greens.
Carolina Moon is similar to a Brie or Camembert. Because we make it in the traditional method it ripens as it ages. It is slightly firm and fresh tasting when it is young and becomes creamy with a mushroomy flavor when it is ripe. It is a good example of a SLOW FOOD with the full flavors of our Jersey cows' milk.
Sausage comes from our whey fed pigs and is made with the hams for a meaty taste. Choose from sage/maple breakfast; mild country breakfast; chorizo; mild or hot Italian; and bratwurst. Spare ribs and ground pork are also available. Come taste a sample of our sausage and our cheeses. If you want to join a CSA, visit the booth or website for Harland,s Creek Farm, which includes our cheese.
