Regular Physical Activity May Strengthen Knee Cartilage, According to Study

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the leading cause of disability among adults. As the population ages, increased intervention efforts are vital to controlling the individual and public health toll of this chronic, crippling joint disease.

Along with early diagnosis, moderate exercise is one of the most effective ways to reduce pain and improve function in patients with OA of the knee and hip. Yet, more than 60 percent of U.S. adults with arthritis fail to meet the minimum recommendations for physical activity.

Based on the "wear and tear" nature of OA, the commonly held belief is that exercise will not strengthen joint cartilage and may even aggravate cartilage loss. Until recently, investigators were unable to put that belief to the test. Radiographs, the standard measure of OA's progression, made it impossible to assess cartilage before severe cartilage damage had occurred. Advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) now make it possible to study cartilage changes earlier in the course of OA.

Two researchers in Sweden, Leif Dahlberg, M.D., Ph.D., and Ewa M. Roos, P.T., Ph.D., used a novel MRI technique to determine the impact of moderate exercise on the knee cartilage of subjects at high risk for developing OA-middle-aged men and women with a history of surgery for a degenerative meniscus tear.

In the November 2005 issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism (http://www.interscience.wiley.com/journal/arthritis), they share evidence to support the therapeutic value of exercise for OA patients, for improving not only joint symptoms and function, but also the quality of knee cartilage.

Stabilization is Key to our Healthy Back & Neck Program
The MedX Healthy Back and Neck Program is specifically designed to improve the functionality of your spinal muscles.  The erector spinae muscles can only be strengthened when the lumbar spine is moving against resistance and meaningful strengthening can also only happen when the hips and pelvis are stabilized.  The MedX Healthy Back and Neck program utilizes the patented system of belts and pads which secure your hips and pelvis eliminating your body's ability to allow your glutes and hamstrings to compensate for your weaker lumbar muscles.

At Mike Arteaga's Healthy Back and Neck Program, we understand that some of our members are very concerned and perhaps nervous that movement and exercise will cause their back to hurt more.  This is why everything we do in the Healthy Back and Neck Program is based each individual member's ability to move.  Our members help us determine their pain free range of motion and our members show us how strong they are through a series of strength tests. The information we gather from those strength tests determine how we proceed within the protocol guidelines of the Healthy Back and Neck Program.

If you or someone you know is experiencing back pain, give us a call at 452.5050 or 691.6161 so we can discuss how we can get you back involved in your life with a stronger, more stable, more durable and pain free back.

The Nautilus Four-Way Neck Machine is a great tool for strengthening the muscles that support our cervical spine or neck. It's a must for preventing osteoporosis or simply adding more stability to our neck. Watch this quick video to learn more about this machine from one of our trainers.

Free Weight Tip
It's human nature to unconsciously gravitate towards things that we are good at while unconsciously avoiding those things that we feel we are not good at. And this of course often applies to our workouts.
When it comes to exercise, our favorite exercises are our strongest and the ones we like least are the ones that we are weakest at. In reality, the exercises we need most are our weakest, yet we often tend to skip them.

Over emphasizing certain exercises while avoiding others is a major contributing factor to injury.  A frequent example is the bench press, which is often performed without comparable work provided for its antagonistic (opposing) muscle group on the back of the shoulder. This creates a situation where the muscles on the front of the shoulder eventually overpower the muscles on the back of the shoulder. As a result they tend to pull the head of the humerus (upper arm) forward in the shoulder socket destabilizing the joint, causing undue wear and pain in the shoulder.

In order to avoid these preventable injuries, make sure to always include your least favorite exercises with each strengthening  workout.

Get Ready for Spring Launch

What's launch? This is the week when all of the programming and music in our group exercise classes change. For new members or members who have never tried a class, it's a great time to try one because you won't feel like the only person who doesn't know the routine.

For the regular group exercisers, this is when we switch things up so your muscles don't get used to the same exact workout and you don't get bored!

Our instructors are pumped to teach you all of the new routines!

Spring Launch 2014 starts Thursday,
April 24!
See you in class!

Health Tip

Keep a log of your exercise activity!  Research has clearly shown that people who tend to document their exercise, keeping some form of a log, are more successful with their program.

Automatic tracking devices like the Nike fuel band or other such wearable devices that  track of the number of steps you take each day can be very helpful.

Hip & Back Machine

Our Hip & Back Machine, developed by Nautilus in the 1970's, is a great machine for strengthening the hips, gluts and spinal muscles.

Because the machine was discontinued, we decided it was time for a little makeover. So our Hip & Back Machine is in Florida having some work done. We hope to to have it back on the floor soon!
