Dr. Peter Monaghan, Principal

Glenbard West Community -

Recently, there has been a lively conversation in the media regarding testing and student achievement. The information below is designed to provide a fuller picture of how our school is preparing young people for the future.  As you may know, Glenbard West was named one of America's Most Challenging High School by the Washington Post.

Sincerely,

College Readiness
  • Our students' ACT scores consistently exceed the state average
  • Ready for College Course Work:  Glenbard score of 56.6 vs state score of 45.6
  • We have twice as many graduates who pass at least one Advanced Placement exam compared to the state average.
  • 86% of the Class of 2015 enrolled in college
Key Factors to Consider When Reviewing PARCC Exam Results:
  • This is a new exam and the results are a baseline.
  • In math, we only tested students in Algebra 1, as we administered the PARCC Algebra 1 course-based exam.
  • About half of our freshmen are in higher level math courses and did not take the math PARCC exam.
  • Our math sequence does not include pre-algebra.  Many high schools offer pre-algebra, and students enrolled in those courses would not have been asked to take the Algebra 1 course-based exam and included in those schools' results.
  • Other school districts opted to test their juniors on the Algebra 2 course-based exams instead of Algebra 1.
  • There were technical issues with administering the inaugural online PARCC assessments.  Many of our students were "kicked out" of the state server during the Algebra exam.
  • Equal comparisons between school districts cannot be made.
  • The PARCC exam is not aligned to the ACT or SAT.
"We are making progress, but there is room to grow," Superintendent David Larson said.  "We see that our professional development and the shifts in instruction we're making are benefiting students," he said.  "Our teachers' hard work with students in the areas of reading informational text and new rigorous writing standards shows. Our English score is 18 percentage points higher than the state score," he added.
On Dec. 11, district-level and school-level results will be posted here  Learn more about the PARCC exam here.
