Student Spotlight: High Point Student Enrolls in College
Student enrolls in SCAD

Just a few weeks ago, we said goodbye to student Jailenes Santos as she set out to attend c ollege. Jailenes joined Reading Connections in April of last year. When she first entered the program, she told us how much she wanted to attend SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) to earn her Master's in Graphic Design. Jailenes studied English in Puerto Rico where she is from. She just needed a little push and guidance in improving her confidence and her skills to apply to SCAD.

Family Literacy Off To A Great Start
Classes begin in Greensboro

"But I don't want to leave!" Melanie yelled, her small 3 year old fists pounding her legs and her little sandaled foot stomping on the cafeteria floor in defiance. Her mom smiled, saying "Pero, tenemos que salir". We have to leave , taking her child by the hand and pulling her towards the door.

Little Melanie was not happy, but as Coordinator for our Reading Connections Family Literacy Program, I was grinning from ear to ear. It was only the second night of our new program at Rankin Elementary, and if the kids were having so much fun that they didn't want to leave, then I knew their moms would bring them back for the next session. The 2016-2017 Family Literacy Program was starting off with a bang!
