Greetings!
Happy Holidays!
WAIT, did I really just type "Happy Holidays?" As I sit here on this gloomy day, covered in my grandmother's handmade afghan with the Detroit Lions football game on TV as the leaves swirl outside, I guess it is not hard to believe that it is December already. Funny, when you were young and "older" people would tell you that time flies when you get older, you thought they were crazy. Suddenly, you are older, and you realize they were right.
November was a wonderful month. I had the opportunity to reconnect with the Charleston community at their 15th Business Education Summit and learn about the great work they have been doing to develop their EDGE Academies. I also had the chance to attend Polk County's 3rd Workforce Education Summit and was blown away by the students I had a chance to talk with during the expo. I even got to sit in a helicopter they refurbished!

'TIS THE SEASON FOR WORKFORCE/EDUCATION SUMMITS!
|
October and November have been peppered with Ford NGL Community Workforce and Education Summits. These summits are a perfect venue for communities to spread the message about their transition to the high school academy model with the greater community and to enlist their support. These summits provide an opportunity for the academy stakeholder group to:
- Present the career academy model to local business/industry, parents and civic leaders
- Engage business/industry in dialogue about industry trends and talent pipeline planning
- Encourage business/industry to join advisory councils, host teacher externships, provide project mentors, etc., to the academies
- Enlist business/industry leaders as advocates for the academy model
- Have student present their work or talk about their experiences in the academy
- Review data with the community such as increases in graduation, college-going and test scores, etc.

Polk County FL Summit - WE3 Career Education Expo
|

Polk County, FL held their WE3 Career Education Expo on November 1-2, 2001 in Lakeland, Florida. Polk, a new Ford NGL community, has made a commitment to expand the percentage of students learning in career academies from 17% to 45% in five years. Polk developed an innovative approach by combining three career education-related events into two days. It began with a teacher recognition breakfast and strategic planning sessions followed by the Career Education Showcase, where academy and career programs were represented by high school students who shared their academy experiences with parents, businesses, and civic leaders.
The showcase was followed by a wonderful dinner and keynote presentation byKaplan Mobray, author, motivational speaker, and career consultant, who presented on The 10Ks of Personal Branding. His message was about how to "create a powerful package called YOU." Kaplan's presentation was motivating and interactive. (www.kaplanmobray.com)
The following morning, the Career Education Expo opened the doors for middle school students and their teachers and allowed them a dedicated time to explore the academies.
You can find Polk County's WE3 marketing materials under Essential Practices 3.6 on the Ford NGL Website.

Charleston, SC Business Education Summit |

Charleston, S.C. - On November 8th, Charleston Chamber Education Foundation held the 16th Annual Business Education Summit
with over 250 business/education leaders in attendance. Charleston is a recent Ford NGL community and a lovely city, worthy of repeat visits. They are strengthening their education system by transforming a portion of their high schools in all four county districts using the Ford NGL framework.
The Charleston Chamber Education Foundation, the intermediary in this community, is supporting the development of 16 Education & Development for Graduation & Employment (EDGE) Academies. We were joined by Marc Hill, Chief Education Officer at the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, who was the keynote speaker. The Boeing Company, who has a manufacturing plant in Charleston, announced a grant of $181,000 to support teacher training, which is Ford NGL Strand 1: Transforming Teaching and Learning. Congratulations Charleston!
Both Polk and Charleston Summit materials are outstanding examples.
Charleston's Business Education Summit marketing materials can be found under Essential Practice 3.6 on the Ford NGL website.

"It was a great experience: learning how to do radio, how to get on air and speak and really get everything right, getting all the nuances of a radio commercial correct it's a long process, and you do a lot of takes. It was great working with people in that field and actually doing a spot on radio."
