August Maintenance Guidelines

After years of working in the industry and building a nursery business around Oklahoma's inclement weather, we are suggesting the following maintenance guidelines:

* Apply Marcum's Slow Release 18-6-12 fertilizer to Bermuda and Zoysia (warm-season) grasses.

* Prune evergreens. (Holly and boxwood shrubs)

* For stressed out trees and shrubs, use Marcum's Root Stimulator and ferti-lome Fish Emulsion Fertilizer.

* Tent caterpillars, and bag worms: Apply

* Expect some leaf fall, a normal reaction to drought.

* Mowing heights for cool-season turf grasses should be 3" during hot, dry summer months. Gradually raise mowing height of Bermuda grass lawns from 1 1/2 to 2 inches.

Chump's Chatter

Once considered a weed, pansies are classified along with violas. Its name is derived from the ____ word pensee, meaning "thought" and was regarded as a symbol of remembrance.

Pansies are winter hardy in zones _____ and have survived the Oklahoma winter weather.

By 1833, there were ____ pansy varieties available to gardeners.

Dahlia's Dirt On Pansies!

There is nothing "pansy" about a pansy!

Fall is just around the corner and pansies are an all time favorite for Oklahoma gardeners. We've selected colors considered to be all time favorites as well as the newest varieties for 2015.

It's hard for us to imagine that the pansy was once considered a weed as most of us can't imagine bringing in the fall season without those vibrant colors accented with dark centers known as faces.

Botanically speaking, the pansy is a perennial but in Oklahoma, we treat them as annuals. The varieties we grow in Oklahoma are happiest in cool weather, have survived winter freezes as well as short periods of snow cover. Just when you think they have succumbed to old man winter, their happy blooms show through.

Great variety selections will be available at both locations beginning mid-late September.

I tend to find recipes and change them to my liking. This one is one of my most requested recipes for summer family gatherings. It's healthy eating (minus the chips) and has great color for any summer table setting.

Even those who aren't big fans of black-eyed peas are surprised when they keep going back for more!
