CATAD'OR WINE AWARDS EN LA PRENSA MUNDIAL

EXCELENTE ARTÍCULO DE REVISTA WINE KINGDOM DE JAPÓN
 SOBRE CATADO'R WINE AWARDS 2016

     Wine Kingdom vol.95 (2016/10) /
Cata d'Or Wine Awards, Santiago de Chile

"Catad'Or Wine Awards, Santiago de Chile" - This contest is organized by Catador Co., who specializes in operating this contest, and supported by the city of Santiago, Image  Chile Air Canada and others. Since its start in 1995, in addition to domestic judges, international judges have been invited from the prospective markets in order to show the outstanding quality of Chilean wines. In this 21th version, 520 wines from 115 producers were registered. Among them, 12 wines for Gran Oro, 83 wines for Oro, 63 wines for Plata were selected. For Gran Oro, wines well-known in Japan such as "Ventisquero Grey Carmenere 20214" or "Conosur, Silencio 2011" were selected.

"Sparkling wines attracting attention in the South America, too"
One of the new things for this year was the entry of sparkling wines from Brazil(18 wines) and Argentina (21 wines). "In the South America, production and consummation of sparkling wines in Chile, Argentina and Brazil is going up and their presence in the international markets is  increasing; therefore, we decided to receive the wines from outside Chile", explained Mr.Pablo Ugarte, executive director of Catador Co.. As a result; the number of wines registered for sparkling wines increased from 55 in 2015 to 87 in 2016. Among them, 14 wines were rewarded. As a judge, I had a very good impression due to the subtle aroma and flavour, and soft texture. Mr. Sergio Correa, the chief judge evaluated the result, saying "Thanks to the accumulation of know-how and

experience at the producers' side, the quality of sparkling wine was greatly improved".

"Garage wine"- new wave of Chilean wine
The sector of garage wine was newly established this year in order to appeal the wines of small quantity but excellent quality.
Mr.Ugarte explained about its background," Recently, small producers' win
es give diversity of style to the Chilean wine market where big producers are dominant and standarized." This category was for the wines with annual production less than 5000 litre. 68 wines were registered but the limited volume wines from big producers, which cannot be recognized as "garage" were included. For this reason, regrettably, there was no judgement for this category in 2016. Mr.Ugarte gets fired up to improve this category in 2017,saying " next year, we plan to explain the criteria of this category much more in details to producers and improve this category". This category is surely to be paid attention from 2017.

"Cata d'Or Santiago de Chile", the most historical international wine contest in Chile, gave me an opportunity to join as a judge continuously from last year. This year, new challenges, such as open the entry of sparkling wine to other countries than Chile, a category of garage wine newly established and so on, supported the new wave of Chilean wine.

All wines were blind tasting. One group is made up of 5- 6 judges. Plata is 86-88 marks, Oro is 89-91 marks, Gran Oro is for more than 91 marks.

A photo from awarding ceremony. Ossa of Vina la Rosa received Gran Oro; furthermore, a special prize of "Best in Show" was awarded. Gran Oro wines were tasted again and the wine which had the highest average marks through these two tastings was selected as "Best in Show". On the left hand, Mr.Pablo Ugarte.

"Visit the awarded winery"  - Vina Undurraga"
"Aliwen Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2015" and  "Sibaris Gran Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2015" got gold medal. "Aliwen" uses grapes from Maipo and Leyda, cool region, half and half. Skin contact is partially done, and fermented in stainless steel tank. Pure, zesty citrus fruitiness is appealing.
In the winery, several egg-shape fermenters were installed. Ms.Pilar Diaz, winemaker, said,"We tried one egg-shape fermenter, and found clearly that wines had much more roundness, so we decided to introduce them more." These fermenters are used for a part of "Terroir Hunter" series.  Undurraga was established in 1885 and has a long history, but they are always looking for the innovation.
