History Comes Alive Across Boston

It's not every day that people in tri-cornered hats appear in the Sawyer Building crooning "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and wielding fifes and drums.  But every day isn't Evacuation Day, and most universities don't have a History Department chair like

To commemorate the date when British troops evacuated Boston during the Revolutionary War, Allison staged a "History Slam" re-enactment starring several alumni dressed as historical figures on April 17.

Art and Business Students Collaborate on Projects that Boost Learning and Creativity

A collaborative effort among art and business students produced artwork displayed on campus, new-product concepts, and enhanced learning and creative skills.

"Our goal was to create experiences that deepen content engagement and creativity across communities within the university," said Professor Susan Nichter of Suffolk's New England School of Art & Design.  "This collaboration crossed many boundaries, not only between the business and art schools, but also because everyone from freshman through seniors was working together."

June 5, 2015

Happy summer Suffolk family members!  We hope both you and your student are enjoying the warmer weather and longer days! Things have been exciting here at Suffolk. Finals exams wrapped up in early May and were followed by the 2015 commencement ceremony.  We are currently preparing to welcome new students into the Suffolk family with New Student Orientation sessions beginning next week.

While summer is a great time to slow down and reflect on all that has been accomplished in the past academic year, summer also offers opportunities for your student to partake in experiences that will be invaluable to their education.  We encourage you to support your student in pursuing meaningful summer activities, whether it be summer classes, a summer job, a summer study abroad experience, or a summer internship.

We wish you a wonderful summer and look forward to sharing with you all that is in store for the coming months and the start of the fall semester!

Sincerely,

Patrick M. Heaton, Ed.D.

2015 Suffolk University Commencement Celebrates Graduates

On May 17, 2015 students graduated from the Suffolk University Sawyer Business School and the College of Arts and Sciences.  Among the 2015 commencement speakers were Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, Boston Globe Editor Brian McGrory, and  Carolyn Mugar, executive director of Farm Aid.

Calling Suffolk University "one of the true crown jewels in the commonwealth's constellation of higher education institutions," commencement speaker Gov. Charlie Baker spoke to graduates of Suffolk's College of Arts & Sciences about service and optimism.

The governor said that to work in the public sector in Massachusetts is to know Suffolk University and the fruits of the education it provides.

Boston Globe Editor Brian McGrory told Suffolk University Sawyer Business School graduates that setting lofty goals and attending to quality will be important in their lives and careers, but that "people with the highest character come out on top," and Suffolk is a school that instills character and values in its students.

Carolyn Mugar, executive director of Farm Aid, spoke about service in the context of graduates' having the courage to effect change in the world.  Mugar talked about the extraordinary power of ordinary people who set their sights on solving what may seem like intractable problems.

Alternative Winter Break Trips

Suffolk University's Alternative Winter Break (AWB) program is designed to offer students the opportunity to engage in interactive and meaningful service trips during winter break 2016.  In addition to the annual trip to El Salvador, Suffolk is excited to offer a new service learning trip to Vietnam!  There are very limited openings remaining in our AWB programs, students should contact the Center for Community Engagement as soon as possible if they are interested in participating.

Alternative Winter Break Trip to Vietnam
Trip Dates: January 4-16, 2016

The AWB Vietnam trip consists of a 4-credit travel course that provides a unique opportunity to learn about Vietnam through travel, study, and service.  During the Fall 2015 semester students learn about Vietnam in GVT 387A: Reconciliation and Conflict, a course that reviews crucial political and economic events in the region, processes of reconstruction of the rule of law, plus democracy and sustainable development.  In January, the delegation spends 12 days learning about political, social, and economic issues in the country while participating in a Habitat for Humanity community service project.

Alternative Winter Break Trip to El Salvador

Trip Dates: January 6-16, 2016

This service learning travel trip, offered annually since 2007, is an amazing opportunity to learn about the rich history of El Salvador and to participate in community service projects.  Students prepare for their trip by taking a Fall 2015 course.  In January, the delegation spends 10 days learning about political, social, and economic issues in the Central American nation while participating in community service.  The delegation retraces the path of the late Congressman Joe Moakley, a Suffolk Law School alumnus, who was internationally recognized for his advocacy of El Salvador during its 12-year civil war and post-war rebuilding.

Students interested in attending either trip should email the Center for Community Engagement.

Fulbright Fellowship Takes Student to Germany

Alyssa Dowler is headed to Germany in August as a Fulbright Fellow teaching English.

The 2015 Suffolk graduate believes that her selection for the highly competitive Fulbright Fellowship had a lot to do with her involvement in the campus and community as an undergraduate.

Dowler, who majored in art history, with a minor in German, worked as a teaching assistant in a course for freshmen, tutored first-graders at an elementary school in Chinatown, and mentored youngsters with intellectual disabilities through the University's chapter of the Best Buddies program.

Dowler's 10-month Fulbright position will take her to Kiel, Germany, the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein, where she will teach English at a vocational training center for teens and young adults.

She credits the guidance of her professors for much of her success.
