Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize for literature today. Can you believe it?
In 1970 while I was at Redlands High School in California, my literature teacher encouraged me to enter a poetry reading contest in which we chose to read our favorite poem from a poet past and present. Since I was on the speech team, I had experience with dramatic readings and decided to enter the contest. I was a fanatic Bob Dylan fan and played his music at every opportunity. I chose to read Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man. I presented my teacher the poem I chose. He had a fit and strongly objected to my choice. I remember his words,
"This is not literature." I read the poem anyway. Finally, I am finally vindicated!
In honor of Bob Dylan's receiving of the Nobel Prize in literature we are holding a Dylan in the Sukkah End of Shabbat event, a musical singalong on Saturday, October 22nd at 6pm at our home in the Lake Forest Park Area with the Heart of Shabbat Ensemble. We'll eat first in the Sukkah (weather permitting), follow with Havdallah, and sing our favorite Dylan with brilliant guitar of Ari Joshua. Bring your Bob Dylan songbooks (if you have one, your raspy voices, an instrument (if you play), and lot's of Ruach-spirit.
