About Cathy: Cathy has lived in eastern North Carolina her entire life. She received her BFA in Painting and Drawing from East Carolina University in 2010. She works full time here at Emerge as the Programs & Finance Director, instructor for private lessons and the Youth Public Arts Project.  Proficient in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, she specializes in mixed media and painting portraits.

Potter's Wheel Classes

  • OPEN POTTERY STUDIO As a benefit of enrollment in our pottery program, current students are able to come in and work anytime during our operating hours. If the main classroom is in use, students are welcome to use the open studio classroom in our facility. This open studio room includes 3 potter's wheels as well as table room for handbuilding a slab roller, and an extruder.
  • Intermediate Potter's Wheel:
    I scream, You scream, We ALL scream for ice-cream!
     
  • Wednesday 6:00 - 8:30pm (6 classes)  What better way is there to beat the heat than with ice cream? So let's make pots for your own ice cream party.  We will make sundae cups, root beer float mugs, and serving bowl sets for toppings.  Projects will incorporate slip and under-glazing application as well as technical instruction. So don't let the dog days of summer get you down - come join us on Wednesdays!
    Instructor: Rae Brown  Cost: $ 85 for emerge members  $125 for emerge non-members / Supply Fee - $20 per bag of clay- covers glazes & firing as well

  • Introduction to Continuing Potter's Wheel 
    Thursdays 6:00 - 8:30pm (6 classes)  This six week class provides the perfect environment for the student wanting to learn the fundamentals of clay. This class is great for beginners as well as those with some experience under their belt.  The overall focus of the course is to develop and further the skills necessary for throwing on the potters wheel. We cover basic clay preparation, and the creation of cups, bowls, handles, and glazing. Class time includes demonstrations as well as plenty of opportunities for one-on-one attention. [Min. 6. Max 8] Instructor: Lauren Rogers  Cost: $85 for emerge members;  $125 for emerge non-members / Supply Fee - $20 per bag of clay- covers glazes & firing as well

Painting & Drawing Classes


 

Painting and Drawing- Acrylic, Watercolor & Oils  Thursdays 6:00-8:30pm (6 classes)  Have you always wanted to learn to paint with acrylic? Are you still trying to master oil paints? Are you a working painter who would like to refine your skills? This class is for you! The course will emphasize the tools and techniques of acrylic and oil painting. Participants will work with the instructor to relay their creative ideas into works of art on canvas!  Beginners, Intermediate & Advanced  are welcome to enroll. Continuing students will work with instructors to problem solve and refine their painting skills. Metal Design & Jewelry Making Classes

Metal Design & Jewelry Making

  • Introductory & Continuing Metal Design
    Thursdays 6:00-8:30pm (6 classes) 
    Participants will learn the basics of metalsmithing: sawing, filing, cold connections such as rivets and soldering.  The beginning project is a bracelet that involves multiple techniques that can be used in future projects.  Continuing participants will work with the instructor to design projects, problem solve, learn more advanced metalsmithing techniques and refine their skills on more advanced projects. Also addressed are different techniques in enameling. [min 6, max 7] Instructor:  Joanne Lang  Cost: $115 for emerge members,  $155 for emerge non-members /Supplies are included with the exception of fine metals, such as silver, that students may wish to use in class.Summer 2013 Session 2: August 8th-September 12th  / Reg. Private Lessons!  

Private lessons are available in all of our areas: Potter's Wheel, Handbuilding, Painting, Drawing, Ceramics, Printmaking, Textiles, Metal Design, Jewelry Making, Photography,Filmmaking, & More! Just Ask!  These lessons hands-on are taught in the one-on-one format with the instructor demonstrating, then letting the student "try it." Only 1st class supplies are included. Supply list will be provided at 1st class. Class dates and times are scheduled by the student and instructor's mutual agreement. Cost: $150 for members, $190 for non-members. - 4 one-hour lessons Bring a friend: $100 each for 2 people, 3 or more $75 each -4 one hour lessons (members only) New Option! -Need only one lesson?
