Rector's Reflections

A Meaning-Making Name

Names are powerful makers of meaning both in the scriptures and in our lives. Consider how much we associate people with their names. A name is merely a word, a sound, yet it can completely represent a person. And our names can be powerful. Think about the resurrection account in John 20 when a distraught Mary Magdalene does not recognize Jesus in the garden. She does not recognize him until when? He speaks her name.

The texts for the fourth Sunday of Advent invite us to explore the name "Emmanuel." "Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel" (Isa. 7:14). And he shall be called "Emmanuel," God with us. This reality changes everything. Never is God so with us as in Jesus of Nazareth. Here is God-made-flesh, and in his very name, the Son of God proclaims just how with us and for us God really is. This fulfillment of prophetic promise offers us a delicate and dramatic reality: God has slipped into skin and walks among us in a totally new way, offering us life and salvation. [Sundays and Seasons, 2016]

This Sunday we will use Morning Prayer for worship at 8:00 and 10:00 am with our Christmas Pageant as the message at 10:00 am.

Advent Blessings,
Bill+

New Bible Study Starts on Thursday, January 5th

Join us as we more deeply into God's Word. We will walk through Romans to bring contemporary application of Scripture to life. Discover how you can participate more fully in God's kingdom as we read through Paul's letter to the Romans. We gather Thursday afternoons 3:00-4:00 pm followed by a brief Eucharist in the Beck Memorial Library.

Thank you once again for letting us use the Beck Library for our weekly Scrabble meetings. The small donation is in appreciation for All Saints' commitment to the Wolfeboro community.

Sincerely,
"The Scrabblers"

Hanging of the Greens

We gather on Monday, December 19th at 5:00-7:00 pm for a new event: The Hanging of the Greens to prepare our worship space for the Nativity of Our Lord. We will decorate our two Chrismon* Trees, hang swags and garland. Please bring Christmas cookies or an appetizer snack to share. All are invited and welcome to assist the Flower Guild and staff, hope to see you there!

*A Chrismon tree is an evergreen tree often found in the chancel or nave of a church during Advent and Christmastide.  The Chrismon tree symbolizes the eternal life Jesus Christ provides and is decorated with white lights and white and gold "Chrismons" ancient symbols for Christ or some part of Christ's ministry from star to cross.

Summer Fair Chairs for 2017

On Sunday, Dec. 11th, the Vestry enthusiastically accepted the recommendation from the Summer Fair Chair Selection Committee, and unanimously voted to have Joanne Crowe and Jay Wyman lead the 2017 Summer Fair.

Joanne and her husband Jeff moved here in 2013 from Nashua. She has been attending All Saints since 2014, and was accepted for membership by the Bishop in March of 2016.  Joanne is a member of the Called to Care Ministry, and the Altar Guild.

Jay has been a member at All Saints since 1980.  Jay was a former Summer Fair Chair in 1986, and is a Eucharistic Minister.  He has also served as a convention delegate.  Congratulations Joanne and Jay on your willingness to lead this ministry.

Cate McMahon

As part of the ongoing series highlighting church leaders, we focus this week on Cate McMahon. Cate has been attending All Saints since 1982.  She was a member of the Vestry as Senior Warden, and is a former Church School Director. She is presently an Eucharistic Minister and Lector. Cate also leads the Women's Worship each Tues. morning. Cate has led Women's Worship for years, and writes a worship service for each Tues. morning session. The photo of Cate was taken Sunday, Dec. 4th, as she was making an announcement about the Kids4Peace project.  In speaking of her love for All Saints, Cate stated that, "they won't let you retire around here."
All of us are the beneficiaries of Cate's long and devoted ministry to All Saints.

Kids4Peace

Kids4Peace is an international grassroots interfaith youth movement dedicated to ending conflict and inspiring hope in Jerusalem and other divided societies around the world.  This past Sunday members of the Vermont / New Hampshire Chapter visited All Saints to talk about their organization.  In the photo, Jen Ackerman and her daughter, Zelda are from Concord.  Next to Zelda is Kelly Gage and Todd Cartier who are group advisors from Lebanon.  Money collected from the Christmas offering will be used to support Kids4Peace.

The following comments were given by Zelda Ackerman to our congregation during announcements at the 10 AM service on Dec. 11th.

Hello my name is Zelda Ackerman I am in 8th grade and I am a Jewish member of k4p. I started 2 years ago when I had just finished 6th grade. I heard of Kids4Peace through my sister who was going into her second year. I was very nervous to go to this camp, but once I got there, I felt instantly welcomed. K4p is a Christian Muslim and Jewish faith summer camp where you learn and understand each other's religions. During my second year of K ids4Peace we welcomed Muslim Girls Making Change who wrote slam poetry to get their point across. We did an activity where everyone wrote a poem about their experience with their religion. We had a chance to present in front of everyone and many people, including me. After lots of people shared we immediately felt an understanding of what everyone had been through. I seems like there are a lot of things in the world right now trying to drive people apart by telling people that they shouldn't trust those who are different from them. K4p showed me that our differences are not a barrier to trust and understanding if we are willing to listen and share. Thank you for supporting our organization.

Phyllis Tessier and Ian Whitmore

Phyllis and Ian are siblings.  Phyllis and her husband, Paul, are long time members who live in Melvin Village.  Phyllis and Paul and their 3 sons attended church in Melvin Village where friends of the boys also attended.  Now, that the boys are grown, they are back at All Saints.  Ian recently moved here from Canada, and successfully recruited his sister to join him as members of our outstanding choir.  Welcome home Phyllis and Paul, and thank-you Ian for choosing All Saints as your spiritual home.

Bill Woodard

This year Bill and his wife Betsy moved here from Maine.  Their godson graduated from Brewster, and after attending his graduation, they decided to move to our beautiful town.  Bill has recently retired, and we are grateful to have Bill worship with us.

Lord and Tailor Board Meeting

Sandi Johnson and Nancy Ghirardini led the Lord and Tailor board meeting that met in the library on Tues., Dec. 13th.

  L.I.F.E. Ministries

All Saints is one of seven churches that have representatives on the L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry Board of Directors.  Our church is represented on the board by our Treasurer, Beth Smith, and Vestry member Dianne Wasmuth. This week the Wolfeboro Rotary Service Organization sponsored a 5 day fund raising drive for our L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry.  In the photo below, taken on Thurs., Dec. 8th at Spencer-Hughes Realty, L.I.F.E. Ministries board member Dianne Wasmuth appeals to the Wolfeboro community for food pantry items and funds.  Also in the photo are board member, Mike Turner, and WASR Station Manager, Jacob Quimby.  The fund raising effort will stay open the rest of December, and during the 5 day campaign our generous community contributed over $55,000.

Nominating Committee for 2017 Annual Meeting
Dianne Wasmuth and Jack McLaughlin, as co-chairs of the Nominating Committee, are seeking volunteers to serve on this committee. If you would be interested in this short term commitment, please contact Dianne (569-3526) or Jack (569-6270).

International Partner in El Salvador

I'm writing to first confirm and THANK YOU for the $580 gift we received from the Women's Worship Group  (and members of the congregation) at All Saints. I spoke with the protection team and we've divvied up the funds for the following (receipts attached in Spanish):

We can't thank you all enough for making this possible. Holidays are often the hardest for families, celebrating a new year with an uncertain future. Anything we can do to create a sense of normalcy and security goes a very, very long way.
