2015 Summer, #2
Nurture spirituality. Foster compassion. Engage in service.
From the Minister

I hope all CUC members will share the experience of Cornel West's Ware Lecture, delivered at General Assembly in Portland on Sat Jun 27. A few of us saw it in person, but all of us can watch the video.

If you don't know much about Cornel West, first check out his website: (CLICK HERE)

I first met Cornel West 25 years when he was a guest scholar at University of Virginia where I was a graduate student. Nothing about that academic encounter prepared me for the preaching style of this wonderful Ware lecture.

Watch the video: CLICK HERE. Peter Morales' 3-min introduction starts at 39:40 into the video, followed by West's 47-min electrifying sermon.

We are bound together in community through having shared experiences. Take some time this week to make Cornel West's address one of ours.

Yours in the faith we share,
      Meredith

Practice of the Week:
Nourish Your Brain
Your brain weighs only three pounds, about 2 to 3 percent of bodyweight, but it needs about 25 percent of the glucose in your blood. It also needs healthy fats, and the building blocks of neurotransmitters. Shortages in any one of the dozens of nutrients your brain needs will harm your body and mind. On the other hand, filling up your neural cupboard with good supplies will bring you more energy, resilience, and well-being. If you "feed your head," you're in fact feeding your life. READ MORE...

Rev. Catherine Torpey. But Lot's Wife Looked Back

After an incident which bothers, or even traumatizes, us, we are often told to "get over it" or "move on."  Our friends and colleagues might be annoyed by our lamentations, or they might feel that they are genuinely helping us to "let it go."  We might be the one telling ourselves that "we should be over it" -- whatever the "it" might be.

Often, however, we just can't let things go.  From things as small as an unintentional slight by a friend to things as devastating as the death of a loved one, it can be difficult to know what to do when a hurt or affront simply stays with us, long past when we thought it should fade.  This sermon explores that which will not let us go.
Catherine was the Intern Minister at our congregation in 2002, and former Minister at UU Freeport, Long Island. Currently she is the Executive Director of the Focusing Institute and believes that all people everywhere can benefit from the insight, compassion and wisdom gained from honoring the felt sense.

Sharing Sunday Offerings
Summer: Kiva
Each month we share 25% of our plate offerings with outside organizations in need. Kiva connects people through lending to alleviate poverty. The CUC 5th-6th grade class created a Kiva account and has lent $300 in ten different countries. As the loans are paid back, they will be able to re-lend the money.
See Rev. Garmon if you have an idea for a future monthly plate share.
