2015 Summer, #1
Nurture spirituality. Foster compassion. Engage in service.
From the Minister

In last Sunday's worship, I prayed: "May we find in our hearts the commitment to initiate conversations with our neighbors, co-workers, extended family. To encourage those conversations, may we acquire and place prominently in front of our homes yards signs that say black lives matter. There is a white supremacist culture that devalues black lives, and its continuation depends upon our silence. So may we not be silent. Thus do we pray." (For the full prayer, CLICK HERE).

The yard signs idea came from colleague, Rev. Karen Brammer, who called me just before last Sunday's service. Order your "Black Lives Matter" yard sign: CLICK HERE.

Second, please also plan to attend an interfaith service "to affirm racial equality and dignity." It's Sun Jun 28, from 4:00 to 7:00pm at Mount Hope AME Zion Church, 65 Lake Street, White Plains. This event is a response to the Charleston murders and will feature worship, music, discussion, and supper. Your presence there is a part of our resolve to no longer be silent about racism. It's free and open to the public, but registration is required. To register, CLICK HERE.

Yours in the faith we share,
      Meredith

June Theme: Prescence/Mindfulness
Practice of the Week:
Nourish Your Brain
Your brain weighs only three pounds, about 2 to 3 percent of bodyweight, but it needs about 25 percent of the glucose in your blood. It also needs healthy fats, and the building blocks of neurotransmitters. Shortages in any one of the dozens of nutrients your brain needs will harm your body and mind. On the other hand, filling up your neural cupboard with good supplies will bring you more energy, resilience, and well-being. If you "feed your head," you're in fact feeding your life. READ MORE...

Remembering Juneteenth,  Petra Thombs

This year is our 10th Juneteenth service at CUC. Our theme this year is "You have to be Carefully Taught--Black Lives Matter!"

Our celebration will be highlighted with a drum circle by J&G Drumming Ensemble-Education Matters. We will have a drumming circle with drums available for 30 participants. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our youth and those young at heart to learn how to play African drums--so join us!

We have joined a host of communities around the country celebrating Juneteenth, the first African American celebration, acknowledging the freeing of last the enslaved Africans, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln, January 1, 1863. The reason for the delay was the strong hold kept by Texans which prevented the word of freedom being communicated. On June 19, 1865, General Granger issued General Order #3, informing all enslaved people that they are now free. Juneteenth is an acknowledgment of the painful past, while celebrating our progress and instilling hope for the future.

Sharing Sunday Offerings
June: Kiva
Each month we share 25% of our plate offerings with outside organizations in need. Kiva is a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. The CUC 5th-6th grade class created a Kiva account and has lent $300 in ten different countries. As the loans are paid back, they will be able to re-lend the money.
See Rev. Garmon if you have an idea for a future monthly plate share.
