Community Real Estate Foundation Shares Success Story
Debbie & Don Bankson
Don & Debbie Bankson transformed vacant land they purchased several years ago into a scholarship to help Shasta County high school students pursue a college education.

Made possible by the Shasta Regional Community Real Estate Foundation (CREF), the Banksons were able to accomplish their philanthropic goals by seeding a scholarship fund now with the intent of growing it in the future .

The idea to set up a scholarship to help local students afford the increasingly high cost of secondary education was sparked by a cousin in another state who had received a scholarship. Don noticed articles and press about scholarship opportunities awarded through the Community Foundation. Upon further research, and conversations with Foundation staff, he and Debbie learned about the possibility and benefits of gifting real estate with the proceeds from its sale establishing a scholarship fund at the Community Foundation. A quick sale of the properties allowed the Banksons to set up their fund and they are excited to award scholarships to deserving students beginning in Spring of 2017.

The Shasta Regional Community Real Estate Foundation looks forward to helping you or someone you know turn a low yield asset into a high yield legacy. Donations that may qualify include a house or condominium, apartment building, vacation home, commercial building, farmland or undeveloped land.
