Under The Microscope Banner
July 2011

Greetings!

Summer is officially in full swing and we want to hear about all the wonderful science research, events, and programs you're participating in for our Summer Science Stories. This event was so successful last year we wanted to give you another opportunity to share stories about your excursions to foreign lands, your field research, and even the camping trip with your family at a national park. You're also welcome to submit reflective pieces from a summer science of your past. If you're not sure what to write, check out a recent Summer Science Story of a physician's trips to Haiti after the earthquake and read how she used her science medical background to make a difference.

We also have many other cool articles this July. Read tips from a supermom scientist and learn about women celebrated in this year's international year of chemistry. Girls in science rock and this month we shed light on an amazing girl in science who uncovered a gem scam that rocked the mineral-collecting world.

Lastly, if you're in the DC Metro area this week, read further to learn about The Society for Women's Health Research's "What a Difference an X Makes" conference.

My Summer Science Story

My Haiti Trips
haiti

In January 2010, after a massive earthquake destroyed much of Haiti, my friend Alicia (who is an ICU nurse) and I (I'm a physician) traveled there to help. It was intense, but we did good work with a small organization called Humanity First...

Jessica Rocks the Mineral-Collecting World
Jessica Monoff

To a collector, the value of a mineral is based on its species, locality and well, the fact that it came from the ground. When 12 (now 13) year old Jessica Simonoff co-wrote a paper proving that the hollowed galenas she was investigating were artificially made...

Summer Science Stories 2011

Sunset Last year we asked you to send pictures, videos, and stories of you engaged in summer science. This year we're doing it again. Are you taking a camping trip on a nature preserve? Will you be interning at a lab, pharmaceutical, or computer science company? Maybe you and your girls are participating in breast cancer walk/run/triathlon. You can even send a reflective piece of your introduction to the fun side of science at an academic camp. Tell us about it and we'll share throughout the summer.

"Women in Science" High School Discussion Questions

Women in Science As part of an ongoing effort to offer our readers resources at all levels, we'll be posting a series of discussion questions for our Women Writing Science books published by the Feminist Press. The first set of questions were for Base Ten.  Below you will find discussion questions designed for high school teachers and their students for Vivian Gornick's book Women In Science: Then and Now. The questions are by Megan Twiddy.

What is Under the Microscope?

UnderTheMicroscope.com, a website funded by the National Science Foundation and built by IBM, collects stories from women interested or involved in science, technology, engineering, and math. A selection of the stories submitted to the website will ultimately be published in a survival guide by the Feminist Press. We invite you to check out our story guidelines and read stories already submitted to the site. UnderTheMicroscope.com also publishes interviews, news, and tips for women in science.

For more information regarding the website, please contact Web Editor Tunisia Riley at editor@underthemicroscope.com.
