Cross Training

 Cross training helps

to reduce injuries.

Repetitive use of certain muscle groups leads to injuries. It increases the wearing and tearing

of the tissues.

But, when you vary your training routine, you allow one group of muscles to rest and recover while you work on the others. This minimizes the risk

of injury.

 Respect Your Body After Exercise

Honor your body following exercise by having a nourishing, balanced meal within an hour of finishing exercise and drink plenty of fluids.

After exercise your body is working hard to rehydrate, to store carbohydrates for your next workout, to repair fatigued muscles and to reduce inflammation to promote optimal recovery from exercise. Focus on unprocessed and colorful foods to make a balanced recovery meal.

Summer Time Tips

For Continued Body Fat/Weight Loss

Summer FunSummer is here!  Get out and have fun!  The sun stays with us well into the evening and we are spending more time outdoors.  Keep yourself active - it's easier to do at this time of year!  Go for a power walk or hike.  For those of you into running, or training for an upcoming event (check the Alter Ego Fitness Experience Facebook Page for updates on local events), the longer days are perfect!

At times it may seem like a workout but gardening is not considered something that will really help burn unwanted fat.  As well, a leisurely stroll on the beach is not considered a great option for burning stored fat.  But, if that's ALL you do, kudos to you for staying active and doing something.  If you want to burn stored fat, or work on a healthy weight loss program, you must increase your heart rate for at least 20 to 30 minutes a day.

Keeping your fat intake and your caloric intake within the 'norms' for your body type will also help you reduce your body fat, encourage your stored fat to be used as energy and, ultimately, result in body composition changes and weight loss.

Along with the hot days of summer comes many times where you may find yourself barbequing or relaxing on the deck with friends.  Unfortunately, this is usually done with "adult type" beverages which quite often include a high sugar content.  That sugar is converted and then stored as fat!  This is something that you need to be aware of if you are trying to keep your weight under control (or even lose a bit) and stay firm so that you look less jiggly in the warm summer clothing styles of shorts, t-shirt and/or tanks.  But, if you do choose to drink, to minimize the negative effects:

  • drink at least one glass of water between drinks to stay hydrated; and,
  • to avoid extra calories, as much as possible, avoid mixing liquor with juice, soda, or tonic water.

Have a great summer everyone!  Make sure that you get outside and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine as much as you can.   Oh, and one final tip that's not really about body fat or weight loss, remember Baz Luhrmann's words of wisdom - WEAR SUNSCREEN!

Remember, we also offer several personal training options!   You can choose one-to-one or, to help reduce costs, work out with a friend or two.  We also offer small group classes and we will go to the location of your choice, at a time that is convenient for the group.

Both Corissa and I are available, throughout the summer, to help you with your goals and commitment to overall health and fitness.

As personal trainers we aren't just there to give you a program and leave it up to you.  We work with you when you need it, follow your progress, offer tips on working out while travelling or juggling the family and follow-up with you consistently to keep you focused and on track.

Some of our clients enjoy having us meet them at their homes for a workout, others enjoy the fact that it's on their time and ALL love the fact that the program is for them - working at what they need/want.

Please check out our website, for more details and information.  Call the office to set up the times/days and, as well, work out the right program for you.

With lots of options to chose from, there's really no reason not to start now, or continue, on a fitness program.  It will give you that high boost of energy and confidence that only strength training and healthy nutrition can provide.

Yours in fitness,

Loreli Urquhart
