The United States Department of Agriculture was recently at Worden Farm filming footage for a tomato growing tutorial, taught by Dr. Eva Worden. The USDA is distributing 100,000 packets of 'Abraham Lincoln' tomato seeds in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the USDA, which was founded by President Abraham Lincoln. The tutorial is on the USDA People's Garden Initiative website and can be found by clicking here.

At the end of our growing season, we plant cover crops in our vegetable fields to improve soil health and environmental quality. We use Sudex, a sorghum-Sudan grass, and cowpeas. Sudex absorbs residual vegetable crop nutrients, limiting environmental impact by preventing possible nutrient leaching during summer rains. Cowpeas, as legumes, help build soil fertility with symbiotic organisms that fix atmospheric nitrogen into the soil. These cover crops will be mowed several times during the Summer and allowed to re-grow. At Summer's end, they will be tilled into the soil, naturally adding essential plant nutrients into the organic farm production system. Other current farm activities include equipment maintenance and planting more trees to create additional windbreaks and habitat for beneficial species.

Farmers Market

Saturday, May 26 was our last day of farmers markets for the season. Our trucks came back to the farm completely empty from the St. Pete and Sarasota farmers markets. It's a pleasure to know that people in our community are eating well, and including our fresh, local, organic produce in their meals. We will miss seeing the friendly faces of our customers and neighboring vendors each week, and we already look forward to returning next season.
