Summer is busy at the College of Health Sciences
The faculty, staff and students of the College of Health Sciences (CHS) haven't slowed down much over the summer. Here are just a few of the events and programs that have been keeping us busy:
Main Line Health and CHS Partner Again
Health Career Summer Academy
In collaboration with Main Line Health, the College of Health Sciences hosted the 4 th Annual Health Career Summer Academy this month. The College welcomed students from Chester-Upland School District, Southwest Baptist Church, Kennett Middle School, and Scott Middle School. Students toured the campus, visited Lankenau Medical Center and Riddle Hospital, and toured an ambulance from Good Fellowship Ambulance Company. They also earned certification in CPR/AED and learned about careers in nursing, athletic training, communication sciences & disorders, nutrition, kinesiology, health, and counseling.

As we welcome in the 2017-18 academic year, we also welcome Dr. Scott Heinerichs as the interim Dean.
Dr. Heinerichs has been at WCU for 16 years. In addition to being a faculty member, Scott has served as a faculty associate in the Provost’s office since 2012. His primary responsibilities in this role were the oversight of university wide faculty development and programmatic student learning assessment. In 2015-16, Dr. Heinerichs served full time as an Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs with primary responsibility for strategic planning and regional accreditation reporting for the institution.

Over 200 New CHS Graduate Students Starting Fall 2017!

The college has experienced a15% increase in graduate students this year. Thank you to all the graduate coordinators and faculty who assisted in reaching this goal. This past year, the college was represented at over 30 recruitment events (professional conferences, college fairs, open houses, and information sessions) to connect with prospective students. In addition to traditional marketing methods we have also utilized geo-targeting and mobile fencing.

Recruitment has already begun for the Spring and Fall 2018 semesters. This year we will be looking to better understand the recruitment and retention of our graduate students. Specifically we will be pulling institutional data and surveying current and prospective students about their experiences throughout the enrollment funnel. The hope is to have better predictors of recruitment and retention in our programs.

Communication Sciences & Disorders ( CSD )
The Communication Sciences and Disorders Study Abroad in Costa Rica experience is a component of the Bilingual Emphasis Course Sequence (BECS). BECS, developed and coordinated by CSD Associate Professor Dr. Patricia Swasey Washington, prepares bilingual English-Spanish graduate students to provide effective speech-language pathology services to individuals from diverse languages and cultures. This year graduate students obtained clinical practicum hours, and undergraduate students obtained service hours as they collaborated with local students and faculty to work with patients with a variety of speech-language concerns.

Great capstone work by MPH Students
Laura DelGuercio, 2017 MPH graduate, was recently recognized for her MPH capstone project, "Implementation of a Food Insecurity Screening Tool in the Hospital Clinic."

Working in the Chester County Hospital, Laura developed a screening tool to assess for food insecurity. The results were surprising, and opened the door for the hospital to connect those in need with the resources they require.

MPH candidate Raelah Garcia, created the Healthy Kids Summer Camp Program through her internship at St. Luke's University Health Network's Community Health Department. The camp ran at two elementary schools in the Lehigh Valley, for third grade students. A partnership between St. Luke's Community Health Department, St. Luke's Sports Medicine Department, and the Kellyn Foundation, made it possible to run the program for free to students. The curriculum, designed by Raelah, provided students with fun physical activities, as well as education in nutrition, health, substance use, sleep, garden lessons, harvesting, fresh produce to take home; substance use, and yoga/mindfulness activities.

The PEAK TV show, on WFMZ Channel 69, visited the Allentown location to capture video of the camp, and interview the principal of the school, the Kellyn Foundation farmer, and Raelah. The Healthy Kids Summer Camp Program is being used as a model for future years, and is being developed into a year round school program.
UPDATE : Raelah has been offered a full-time job– her dream job, at St. Luke's University Health Network as a result of her work there! CONGRATULATIONS, Raelah!

Kinesiology ( KIN )
Fourteen Sports Medicine or Kinesiology majors took part in  Study Abroad in Greece program this summer. Students expanded their knowledge and understanding of the fields of sports medicine and Kinesiology outside of the United States, and they increased their cultural competence by engaging and immersing in the Greek culture. This program provided unique experiences to students including a visit to the Acropolis in Athens, the ancient ruins in Delphi, three beautiful Greek Islands, and four medical rehabilitation centers.
Congratulations to Dr. Monica Lepore for your participation in Penticon ITU 2017 Multisport World Championships, and for being selected as the Team USA flag bearer! Go, Monica!

Nursing ( NUR )
In collaboration with faculty from Nutrition, Sports Medicine and Communication Sciences, the CHS Nursing department hosted area high school students, from sophomores to seniors, for the Girls in Medicine Program. Students spent a full day learning about a variety of different health science occupations and were provided interactive experiences. The final event was a visit from Good Fellowship ambulance company.

Dr. Cheryl Monturo has been engaged in a joint research study, for two years, with Chester County Hospital. The recently published research, examined the difference in leadership styles and expectations between bedside nurses and their immediate clinical managers. Based upon the results, the "Transformational Leadership: Dual Perceptions" study may offer opportunities to address organizational changes and improve both professional development and patient care. "Youth Mental Health First Aid Training for Nursing Students"
Nutrition ( NUT )
Dr. Jeanie Subach, Assistant Professor in Nutrition, and her team of 20 volunteer nutrition majors training members of the Adapted Wellness Program on food safety and kitchen skills. The Adapted Wellness Program is a program for young adults with developmental disabilities.

The nutrition portion of the program has evolved from the classroom to the foods lab, and now to a student-run Coffee House at the Artisan Exchange in West Chester.

"Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program"  
Sports Medicine ( SMD )
In May, the Department of Sports Medicine welcomed the inaugural cohort of students for the 2-year professional Masters of Science in Athletic Training. The profession has mandated that all baccalaureate programs have until 2022 to transition to the master’s as the entry level degree into the profession. The master’s program will build on the history and tradition of the undergraduate program with some unique features. Students will have three full-time clinical immersion experience as part of the program, that can occur throughout the country. Additionally there will be coursework in cadaver anatomy, evidence based practice, and injury prevention strategies. For more information, please contact Neil Curtis, [email protected].

CHS Faculty Spanning the Globe
Many faculty members were busy traveling the globe to present their research :
  • Selen Razon (KIN) presented two papers at the 14th World Congress of the International Society of Sports Psychology in Seville, Spain
  • Christine Williams (HEA) presented two oral presentations at the 38th Stress and Anxiety Research Society Conference in Hong Kong.
  • Sharon DeJoy (HEA) presented at the 6th Annual International Obesity Stigma Conference in Prague, Czech Republic, and the Motherhood Initiative for Research and Community Involvement Conference in Galway, Ireland. 
  • Neha Sunger (HEA) presented at the 3rd International Conference on Water Resource and Environment in Qingdao, China and received a “Best Oral Presentation” Certificate.
  • Margaret Ottley (KIN) served as a Sport Psychologist as part of the USATF National Team Staff for the 2017 Pan Am Junior Championships in Lima, Peru
  • Dr. Lynn Monahan (NUT) and Dr. Michael Di Giovine (Anthropology) took 18 undergraduate students from across the university (four nutrition majors, two nutrition minors and three community nutrition graduate students) for a 5-week, intensive course in May, to Perugia, Italy. The course entitled: Ethnographic Field School: Sustainable Foodways as Markers of Cultural Heritage, was the first interdisciplinary, study abroad course taught in the Nutrition department.
  • Barbara Harrison, Carolyn Meehan, Debra Mandel, and Rachel Joseph (NUR) presented at the 28th International Nursing Research Congress of the Sigma Theta Tau in Dublin, Ireland.
