What Has Conservation Been Up To?
Our Conservation Crew has been busy! At the DNR site, our youth successfully cleared three acres of floodplain forest infested with garlic mustard, buckthorn, burdock, and purple loosestrife. This fall, our crew will be busy planting native shrubs and spreading native seeds to restore the forest to a more diverse ecosystem. We can’t wait to see this forest to thrive for years to come! Grow Crew also designed two native gardens around the DNR Central Region Headquarters campus, and then presented their designs and work to the Regional Director and other department heads. Crews working in the fall will finish planting the gardens.
Hooray for Our Community Biking Partners!
Our Conservation Crew partnered with Cycles for Change this summer to put on a successful Slow Roll! Community members enjoyed a 6-mile bike ride to highlight many of the parks we work in, and followed up by a delicious meal made by Cook Fresh interns. Cycles for Change also taught our bike crew interns valuable bike skills, such as fixing flat tires! A huge thank you to Cycles for Change!
Bringing Color to the East Side!
Urban Roots Youth Council was awarded a grant that will enrich the entire East Side! Our Youth Council has been working with mural artist Greta McLain (her work pictured right) of GoodSpace Murals to plan a design that will be installed at Phoenix Market- right next to our flagship garden at 3 rd and Maria! Keep your eyes peeled for a community listening session in mid- October to see our first draft! Let’s add some more color to the East Side!

Farmer's Market Fun!

Come find us at the beautiful outdoor market located next to the Mill City Museum and Guthrie Theater on the riverfront every Saturday through October. Keep your eyes peeled in our next newsletter for winter dates and small-batch preserves information!

Intern Highlights
Harvest Star Imogene!
After 5 years with Urban Roots, Cook Fresh Harvest Star Imogene Silver has graduated and is on her way to the University of Minnesota! She has made an immeasurable impact on the Cook Fresh program. We are so proud of the work she has done with Urban Roots, and the leadership roles she has taken on throughout her time with us. We can’t wait to see what Imogene’s promising future has in store!
MVP Marquise!
Marquise has just completed his second summer season with Urban Roots! Marquise has great energy working in the Market Garden Crew, as his charismatic and determined personality make him a great youth leader. Marquise has been busy this summer seeding beds for fall crops- and he's led the charge to get us ready for Fall! One of his favorite jobs is selling produce at the Mill City Farmers Market, as he has the unique ability to draw in customers and get them to test and try new ways of eating! Stop by the market and meet this all-star intern. Thanks for the great summer, Marquise!

All-Star Cassandra!
Cassandra Xiong wrapped up her 4th year as a Conservation intern and is off to Century College. Through her time at Urban Roots, she has given a presentation on rain gardens at the State Fair, designed and planted many rain and pollinator gardens, pulled more invasive plants than anyone could count, presented a restoration plan to the Commissioner of the DNR, chased and caught snakes and frogs, and made friendships that will last a lifetime. Cassandra hopes to do something with wildlife in her future, and we know she will be amazing at what ever she puts her mind to!
Thanks to all our fantastic interns for a great summer!
