Happenings This Week
Backpack Drive
Started with a blast!
Backpack supplies
Backpack Drive runs through July.
We kicked off our annual Back 2 School backpack drive last Sunday and your donations have already put us over halfway to our $4,000 goal.

We have committed to providing 66 filled packs for St. Mark's, City Heights and 33 for St. John's, Fallbrook, and we'll purchase 150 for North County Lifeline, Vista.

There are two ways to help! Pick up a supply list, purchase a backpack, fill it and bring it to church by  August 1; or donate money so we can purchase backpacks and supplies in bulk on your behalf.  We can get filled backpacks for $15 (elementary) and $25 (middle/high school) by buying in bulk, so your cash donations go a long way!

Look for the table in the courtyard every Sunday in July! Don't miss the Blessing of the Backpacks in church on Sunday, August 5.

Two Daily Shows from Convention
Offering an insider's view
Two daily shows originating from the 79th  General Convention of the Episcopal Church will offer an insider's view to Episcopalians across the church.

"For a lot of people, General Convention can be overwhelming," said the Rev. Lorenzo Lebrija, host  of both  Inside General Convention   and   Adentro de la convención general.  "But this year we're aiming to change that. We're going to take you all over the convention hall. We're going to meet different people from throughout the church and give you an insider's look."

Each show premieres July 4, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. in English and at 6:30 p.m. in Spanish (both times are CT). Joining Lebrija are  correspondents Hannah Wilder for  Inside General Convention  and  Hugo Olaiz for  Adentro de la convención general .

Produced by the Office of Communication,   Inside General Convention  and  Adentro de la convención general  will be  daily 30-minute magazine-format shows. Each show will offer news and highlights as well as its own lineup of interviews and guests.

You can access the shows  here.  The shows will also be available on the  Media Hub,  live and on-demand.

Parish News
Healing Service this Week
Thursday, July 5
When the 4th of July falls on a Wednesday normal schedules are often subject to change. Even though the parish office will be closed the day after the 4th  there will be a Healing Service at 10:00 a.m. , but no Bible study following. It's not a stretch to think that many may benefit from some healing after the holiday.

Mid-Year Statements
Keeping track of donations
The end of June marked the  mid-point in our fiscal year.
Giving statements are available upon request. Contact Christie Tugend, and she will be happy to shoot one right out to you. Even though half of the year has already elapsed (egads) it is never too late to
setup automatic contributions to the parish via your
bank account or credit card. If you haven't pledged and want to  conveniently give from time to time, you may do so on your smart phone at https://onrealm.org/ChristEpiscopal4872/Give .

Even better still.... make sure you are signed up on Realm where you can  view your giving 24/7 AND make contributions to most fundraisers at anytime. Haven't yet signed up?  Go here and create a log-in and password. Your profile should already be there, you just need to access it! If you have any trouble, give Christie a call and she can help you out (619-435-4561).

Traveling Mercies
Send us your photos
If you're lucky enough to travel this summer, you're bound to find an Episcopal church nearby. We'd love to
share in your travel adventures by seeing a  photo of you and the family at Episcopal churches throughout the nation. Just snap a pic and email it to Christ Church . We'll feature you in the weekly eCommunicator.

If you  travel abroad and come home with  left-over currency, you may donate it to Christ Church. Simply bring it in to the parish office - we'll exchange it and add it to the week's plate!

Christ Church at Pride
Join the group - Saturday, July 14
Come join the parade!
Christ Church will again join the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego at this summer's Pride Parade, Saturday, July 14. Our Episcopal presence has numbered near 100 and sends a wonderful message to the community that "all are welcome at the Episcopal Church." Young and not so young, clergy and lay, men, women and children of the Episcopal church march the parade route together. If you can't walk the route, there is a trolley you can ride. St. Paul's Cathedral is leading the charge in all Pride planning for our diocese, and they have organized a number of events during Pride Week - click here for a full listing.  If you'd like to join in this year, and/or order a t-shirt, please contact  Christie Tugend , parish administrator.  We'll keep you up-to-date on the parade specifics as they become available.

Outreach/Service Ministry
St. Mark's Neighborhood Food Pantry
Increased need in summer
Bring granola, protein, and cereal bars.
Summer can be especially hard on low-income families whose children are often provided free breakfast and lunch, even after school snacks,  during the school year. The food pantry can provide some help when resources are scarce.

Basic non-perishable items are always needed:  canned vegetables, beans (canned and dried, but not green), canned fruit, canned protein, pasta sauce, canned tomatoes, peanut butter and jelly, cereals, oatmeal, rice, canned soups, pastas, chili, cooking oil, and single serving items for their homeless guests.

You may bring your donations to church on Sunday or drop them by the parish office during the week.

The Diocese and beyond
A Theological Gem in Our Own  Backyard
Episcopal Church Center, Ocean Beach
Our diocese has a local theological training program in Ocean Beach open to all adult learners. Anyone can take classes on subjects ranging from Hebrew and Christian scriptures to world religion, spirituality, ethics, and others. While these courses are graduate level, and prepare future deacons and priests for ordination, they are accessible, interactive and relevant to modern day ministry.

The fall semester begins on September 21. Classes are $400 each, and may be audited for $150 each. An informational discernment day will take place on Saturday, July 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the school. Learn more here.

Episcopal Migration Ministries
Aiding refugees in the United States
Love God,
Love Neighbor
"For the first time since World War II, there are more than 65.6 million displaced people worldwide, including more than 22.5 million refugees. From the moment they arrive in their new communities, refugee clients receive care, hospitality, and assistance from professional affiliate staff and from the hundreds of generous church volunteers who welcome the stranger through this ministry each year."  Episcopal Migration Ministries

San Diego's RefugeeNet organization is part of a larger ministry within the Episcopal Church. Visit the Episcopal Migration Ministries to learn about the work they do. There are opportunities to become involved both locally and nationally and show your support in these very troubled times.
