Nonprofit Enlists Homeless to Improve Quality of Life for Themselves and the Neighborhood
North Beach Citizens (NBC) has been a long-standing partner of Invest In Neighborhoods (IIN). The nonprofit provides meals, housing and employment assistance, and other social services to homeless and low-income individuals struggling on the streets of one of San Francisco’s most tourist-laden neighborhoods. The IIN initiative supports their Street Beautification Program which provides valuable life skills to its participants while keeping the neighborhood looking pristine. Many of those who have successfully moved on maintain their connection to the center’s community and return to NBC to help clean, see their friends, or welcome new people. Read more…

Businesses Returning to the Mission a Year after Massive Fire
Last June, a five alarm fire at 29th and Mission displaced 58 people from their homes and 8 businesses at least temporarily closed due to fire or water damage. Five of those businesses each received $10,000 in grants from Invest In Neighborhoods in the Office of Economic and Workforce Development through the Disaster Relief program. A year later, half of the businesses have returned after the fire and efforts are underway to bring the others back. “The good news is that the anchor legacy businesses on the block want to come back,” said Supervisor Hillary Ronen, who represents the neighborhood. “I’m certainly going to do everything in my power to get them back.” Read more…

LowRider Council Hosts King of the Streets
The City and County of San Francisco’s Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) Invest In Neighborhoods, have partnered with Mission District community organizations and Univision to develop and implement a multi-month bilingual marketing campaign to attract customers to Mission Street businesses. As part of this campaign, the San Francisco Lowrider Council joined the effort by hosting King of the Streets on July 8th—an event to exhibit cars and highlight the long tradition of lowriders and cruising in the Mission. Winners of the annual King of the Streets contest displayed their crowns while the crowds enjoyed the music. About 300 lowriders cruised the streets and hundreds of people and families spent their evening appreciating the custom works of art and eating at their favorite local spots. The Excelsior and Outer Mission Neighborhood Strategy Development Update
The Excelsior & Outer Mission Neighborhood Strategy is developing a vision to improve and enhance the Excelsior, Outer Mission, Mission Terrace, Crocker Amazon, and Cayuga neighborhoods. The Strategy maximizes the benefits of ongoing and future projects to make the area an even better place to live and visit. This neighborhood-level visioning process requires ongoing dialogue between City officials, community leaders, residents, students, service providers, property owners, and others to consider practical approaches to implement the necessary public improvements and investments. Since the Neighborhood Strategy Kick-Off Meeting, the project team has been doing active outreach and connecting with neighborhood stakeholders to get input for the vision of the neighborhood. If you are a resident and visitor of the Excelsior/Outer Mission, complete a survey and provide us with your feedback. Click Here for Neighborhood Surveys and help identify the neighborhood's needs, priorities and preferences. The Working Group will be meeting this week to get working. To learn more about the Project’s next steps, components and how to get involved, visit the Project Website!

Knitting Together the Civic Center Spaces
Last month,
Invest In Neighborhoods in the Mayor's
Office of Economic and Workforce Development announced its partnership with several City agencies, nonprofits, and community groups to create the
Civic Center Commons. There are grand plans for unifying the United Nations Plaza, Civic Center Plaza, and Fulton Street between the Main Library and the Asian Art Museum to create a neighborhood park. The latest attraction to behold is a temporary art project,
Knitting the Commons, which has literally swathed trees in the area with custom, knitted sweaters. Ultimately, the plan for the Commons will support existing and attract new small businesses in the area; and will improve quality of life for those living near, working in, and visiting the Commons.
