February 2016
Dear Friends of Shoals Marine Laboratory,

Student open houses, scholarship awards, finalizing course plans, hiring summer staff and faculty, and writing lots of grant proposals... this is the stuff of winter SML staff work! Recruiting students is a big focus right now. Did you know that most of our students are from other universities - not Cornell or UNH? SML's reputation and our spectacular alumni help attract students from around the world to our summer courses. SML's Dr. Coyer is touring schools across the Northeast and Midwest, talking to students in person about all we offer here at SML. We would love your help to promote our courses to any college and high school students you know! Please feel free to forward this newsletter to anyone who might be interested in immersing themselves in marine science this summer! Check out this great video:
SML Celebrates the Art of Hassam!
Childe Hassam, Isles of
Shoals, 1907, oil on canvas, North Carolina Museum
of Art, Raleigh. Promised
gift of Ann & Jim Goodnight.
Childe Hassam is widely considered the father of American impressionist painting! SML has been working with the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Peabody Essex Museum to bring together an exhibit of Hassam's Appledore paintings. This exhibition will open in North Carolina in March and Massachusetts in July. The exhibit features approximately 35 of Hassam's finest Appledore landscapes in oil and watercolor, on loan from public and private collections. Taken together, these paintings offer a glorious celebration of our beautiful island home! It is also a fascinating study of how Appledore's landscape has changed (and not changed) over time. This show is not to be missed!

Thanks no doubt to the popularity of 'Shark Week' on TV, one of the most requested topics for a class from our students is SHARKS! SML is proud to have Dr. Laura Jordan from UCLA (and she's an SML alum!) coming to Appledore Island this summer to teach Introduction to the Biology of Sharks, Skates, and Rays. Dr. Jordan
has an impressive teaching and research resume that includes studying the physiology of sharks and their relatives.

It sure doesn't feel like summer is coming, but it will, and once again SML will welcome thousands of people to Appledore Island for our academic and outreach programs. We hope you will join us this summer. 2016 is shaping up to be an epic season, filled with opportunities for everyone ! Please keep an eye on our website for the latest events as we are adding them weekly. From science courses to art and food - there is lots to enjoy and to celebrate as we recognize our 50th year! We are grateful for your support in bringing us to this year of celebration! SML would not be here with out YOU!
