Sierra Business Council September 2016

The mornings may be getting cooler (and darker...), but summer isn't throwing in the towel yet, and neither are SBC's triple bottom line-focused programs.

Below you'll find recaps from the Lake Tahoe Summit and California Adaptation Forum, along with updates from Sierra CAMP, SBC's Climate Planning team, and big news from our Sierra Small Business Development Center.

Seasons may change, but our efforts in fostering innovative projects that benefit Sierra communities, economies, and environment simultaneously remain steadfast.
Sierra SBDC Brings Back Etsy Craft Entrepreneurship Program!

The  Sierra Small Business Development Center at Sierra Business Council is excited to bring back the Etsy Craft Entrepreneurship program this fall!

Starting on Wednesday, October 26th the SBDC will again run this innovative program providing free training to adults with existing creative skills to supplement their income and sell their product on the popular e-commerce website, Etsy.com.

As one of the first Etsy Incubators in the country, the workshop curriculum is provided by Etsy and will provide participants with tools for setting up a shop, making sales, marketing their product, and photography best practices. If you are interested in applying for the October course please email Jessica Carr at  [email protected]
 Sierra CAMP August Event Recap

Thank you to all those who participated in   Sierra CAMP's events last month, including our workshop with the  California Energy Commission on Improving Access to Renewables & Energy Efficiency and the webinar, California Forest & Climate Policy: What it Means for the Sierra.

Thanks to many of you, both events were well attended and fostered robust conversations on Sierra climate and energy needs. Last week, Sierra CAMP brought the issues to urban California at the  California Adaptation Forum in Long Beach. We organized two sessions, one on Sierra forest health and climate change and the other on re-defining equity - a conversation on state measurement of disadvantaged communities and, in particular, how to better recognize rural poverty.  Contact us to learn more and c lick here  to sign up for Sierra CAMP updates!
Placer Land Trust and Sierra Business Council to Honor
Loren Clark at PLT's Conservator Dinner

Courtesy Loren Clark
Join Placer Land Trust and Sierra Business Council in honoring Loren Clark with not one, but two prestigious awards! The man who has devoted so much of his life to the conservation of Placer County's gems will be awarded both the Placer Conservator Award along with SBC's Sierra Vision Lifetime Achievement Award. The celebration will take place on  Thursday, October 20, from 6-9pm at   The Ridge Golf Club and Events Center in Auburn.

Loren is being recognized for his commitment to the triple bottom line, the understanding that our economy, our environment, and our communities work best when working together. Loren was critical in implementing the  Placer Legacy  program that protected thousands of acres in Placer County. Additionally, Loren laid the ground work for the  Placer Conservation Plan , which aims to promote economic development in the region while protecting nearly 50,000 acres of critical habitat. Finally, his skill set in landscape photography cannot be ignored, Loren has captured incredible images of the Sierra Foothills that showcase his respect and understanding of the region.

From the SBC Blog: A Day in The White House Press Corps
SBC Government Affairs Director, Kerri Timmer

I recently crossed off a bucket-list item I didn't even know I had. I got to play "journalist-for-a-day," with real media credentials and everything! Not just for *any* event, either - but for the 20th annual Tahoe Summit, with the President of the United States as keynote speaker!

I showed up bright and early and was escorted past the long line of ticket-holders awaiting entry. At a separate table, away from the crowd, someone checked my name off a list and passed me over to Secret Service - yes, their bullet-proof vests actually said "Secret Service" - to get swiped by their wand and have my bag sniffed by a handsome bomb/drug-detecting Malinois. Then I was handed my media credentials, announcing me as a member of the "White House Press Corps." The White House Press Corps, people!
