Youth Written Newsletter for August 2016
Summertime Success!
Happy August! We aren't letting all this sunshine get in the way of surpassing both business and personal goals as we continue to take charge and transform our lives at More Than Words!  We are so thankful for all of the support we have received. To continue to support us, we hope you will stop by one of our stores for some summer reading or visit us at an upcoming Pop-Up Shop. Check out what's going on below!
GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT
By Melanie, MTW Waltham Graduate

My name is Melanie. I am 19 years old and have been in DCF custody since I was 8. Before More Than Words, I was in high school and struggling to find a year round job that wasn’t just for the summer. I learned about MTW through my social worker who suggested I work there because I love to read. When I came in I was very shy. I didn’t consider myself a leader. I have learned to balance my own personal style with the flow of also being a leader to my peers. MTW has shown me the ins and outs of the business and shown me how to embrace customer service. This June I graduated from high school and currently I am a first year college student at Bridgewater State University. I am part of the Academic Support for College and Life program that provides additional support for foster care youth on campus. Through this program, they are helping me academically, socially, and financially through my first year of college and beyond. I am confident that through this program, I will be successful in earning my bachelor’s degree. More Than Words provides a great support system and an awesome team of staff who have helped me get where I am today and who will continue to support me throughout college.

More Than Words Welcomes Film Crew
By Dirique, MTW Associate
More Than Words was able to host a film crew from Kentucky Educational Television who wanted feature MTW! I was able to be a part of the filming and tell them about myself, MTW's mission, and what exactly it is we do here at MTW. They asked questions about youth development, working on a bookstore shift, and what life was like for me before MTW. It was an opportunity for me and other youth to be a voice for More Than Words.  It was also a chance to let a new audience know the goals I have set for myself and share  what I’ve personally gotten out of being here. We hope this feature will be an inspiration!
Red Sox Trophy Visits MTW
By Yve, MTW Partner and Alidio, MTW Associate

More Than Words was proud to host the Red Sox Championship trophy in our Boston store! Staff and youth had a fun time taking pictures with the trophy. One of our favorite parts was being able to share it with some longtime Boston Cares volunteers, including Emma who has been helping out at More Than Words since before we expanded to Boston from Waltham. Volunteers are an important part of our community and groups like Boston Cares bring strong and reliable help to meet our business goals!  Thank you to the Red Sox and Boston Cares for being part of our movement!
