Youth Nite
Youth Nite provides a continuum of services that help youth identify their own strengths, teaches them to advocate for their health needs, and helps them develop coping skills and solutions to their own problems. Once a month teens and young adults that are impacted by HIV/AIDS, commune over dinner, share stories, and provide peer support to one another. This month 4 youth discussed HIV/AIDS medications, adherence issues, and participated in extracurricular activities.
In April Sunburst Projects engaged the youth in a service learning discussion. Youth learned about the NorCal AIDS Bike Ride for the first time, and were given an opportunity to join as a member of the Sunburst Projects Cycle Team. Many were interested joining the team in 2015.
As an introduction to the benefits of community service, the next Youth Nite program will take place on Sunday May 18th from 10-2pm at Caesar Chavez Park for the closing ceremonies of the NCAC AIDS Ride.
Beauty Day
In tribute to celebrating the International Woman's Day, Sunburst Projects organized a Beauty Day in early April. Volunteers from Paul Mitchell, Hair Productions and Brenda's Mane Event provided complimentary haircuts, styles, and make-up to the clients that participated. Light refreshments were provided in an atmosphere of sisterhood. All participants received take-home beauty products and costume jewelry donated by the community. A total of 12 women living with HIV/AIDS participated in the event.
THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE VOLUNTEERS AND DONORS THAT MADE THIS EVENT A SUCCESS!
Family Luncheon
An educational and fun-filled family luncheon with an interactive workshop on character traits was provided for client families. Participants learned how home settings affect youth character development. Discussions focused on role modeling that teaches youth character development as well as guiding parents on how to set and enforce appropriate behavioral limits. Activities engaged both parents and children equally, and emphasized the importance of parent-child collaboration. Sunburst Projects served lunch and treats. A total of 10 families were present, 10 adults and 23 children, in addition to four staff.
