The Cast and Crew of August: Osage County
Issue 32
April 29, 2018
Dear LaGuardia Families,

Excuse us for a second while we pick up our jaws from off the floor, which had dropped in amazement Thursday evening and stayed that way all weekend.

It all started at the opening performance of the SDF #2: August: Osage County. As soon as we settled in our seats, we were awed by the stunning stage design---a three-story metal-framed building, complete with sets of stairs, incredibly detailed and furnished rooms and windows that were back-lit with outdoor scenery. And when the actors took to the stage, they completely captivated us with their portrayal of a deeply complicated family. During every second of this four-performance run, which concluded on Sunday evening, we marveled at how these were teenagers performing so convincingly as middle-aged adults. A standing ovation for the tech crew, the actors, and their very dedicated and talented teachers! We have included some photos below.

Since our mouths were already agape, they fell even further Friday evening as we sat in the Concert Hall and listened to the magnificent musicians performing in the Concerto Concert. The featured soloists, Andrew Chen, piano; Brian Isaacs, viola; Maggie Ma, piano; and Giorgio Poma, cello; were the winners of the Concerto Competition and played alongside the fabulous LaGuardia Symphony Orchestra. Again, we had to pinch ourselves. These were teenagers beautifully performing pieces by Bernstein and Tchaikovsky, not the Boston Pops! Let's give another standing ovation for the musicians and their talented conductor!

We also want to congratulate the sophomores and juniors who were inducted into the National Honors Society last week. These students maintained a 95 average in their science classes in addition to having a 90 cumulative average. They deserve a round of applause! Please scroll down for a few photos.

Parents of Seniors: Please note that the deadline for turning in the Senior Prom contract and the $225 fee is May 8. The prices go up to $235 after May 8, while tickets last. Ms. Laricchia's students engage in a final project, creating their own instructional videos on how to make tiramisu or insalata Caprese (Italian class) and guacamole (Spanish class). A new Macbook Pro will allow students to edit their video projects, write and recite poetry on Google Voice, and more. The classroom computer will be essential for semesters to come! This project is 58% funded by 7 donors so far.

THANK YOU!

DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.

In the past three years, 100% of our faculty's requests have been funded by parents and other generous supporters.

DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs. bit.ly/dcmatch

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY

We were so awestruck by the amazing performances and set for
August: Osage County (SDF #2) that we are ending with a series of production shots. Tracy Letts' Pulitzer prize-winning play is challenging material -- and the Drama senior actors -- both casts -- pulled it off with flying colors. The three-story set was constructed largely of welded steel, a masterpiece of construction by our Technical Theatre Studio students as well as Drama Studio volunteers. This production was a wonderful collaboration between students of both studios.

Congratulations to all involved and many thanks to our professional designers and LaGuardia Drama and Tech faculty.
