Issue 11
November 19, 2017
Dear LaGuardia Families:

With the holiday season and a full roster of performances upon us, we have lots of news to share this week. Hold onto your hats!

What could be a more perfect way to usher in the holidays than hearing LaGuardia's vocalists perform at the Riverside Church? One of our many favorite events of the year, the Choral Concert at Riverside Church (490 RSD corner of 120th Street) is on Tuesday, November 21st at 7:30 p.m. The concert features the Senior Chorus, Women's Chorus, Mixed Chorus and Girl's Chorus.  Tickets are $20 for adults/$10 for students and are only available at the door.  Please note that students in Elementary Chorus will be admitted free of charge.

In order for this lovely event to proceed, however, the students need escort volunteers to get from school up to the church for rehearsals and then back to LaGuardia. Thanks to all who have already signed up, but we still need a few more people for the last two shifts:  11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m. and another round from 1:45 p.m.-3:45 p.m. You can find out more details and  sign up to help here .

Our senior drama students will be onstage in the Little Flower Theater on Tuesday, November 21 at 5:00 p.m. for the first in a series of three One-Act performances. Please refer to our upcoming events calendar for the full list of performances. These are free and open to the public, and needless to say, impressive.

We hope you've all bought your tickets for 42nd Street. It's going to be spectacular and we'd hate for anyone to miss it. While you're at the show, you'll have a chance to win house seats for Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen! We'll be selling raffle tickets for $20 each in the lobby outside of the theater at every show. You can also up your chances by purchasing raffle tickets online. Stay tuned for more details.

As you start thinking about holiday gifts, we've got lots of great ideas that will also help benefit LaGuardia. Our studios will be selling merchandise in the lobby before our next PA meeting on December 5th from 4:00pm to 5:45 pm. This will give students a chance to purchase gifts, too. Think of all the proud grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who'd love a LaG studio T-shirt or sweatshirt!

We've also got the ultimate holiday gift for a music loving teen: Two tickets to the sold-out Jingle Ball concert at Madison Square Garden on Friday, December 8. Details on how to obtain the tickets will follow in a few days.

Giving Tuesday , the Gates Foundation's matching grant program, is November 28.  Please scroll down for details on how to participate.

And finally, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, we want to acknowledge our appreciation for the sponsors of 42nd Street (see below) and to all of our volunteers who've helped out in countless ways this fall.

Have a great week and Happy Thanksgiving!

Give Thanks to LaGuardia Teachers!
LIFTOFF Matching Grant This Week Only!

There's no better way to express our thanks to LaGuardia teachers than by supporting their DonorsChoose projects to benefit their classrooms!

Ms. Fischer's Math department printer---also used by many students and teachers---is out of toner and technology upgrades are sorely needed in Mr. Mesiouris, Mr. Harkness and Mr. Rahman's classrooms!

There is no budget from the NYC DOE to support these necessary tech improvements, so teachers are taking matters into their own hands by making these requests. Any size donation helps and sharing the links helps, too!

LIFTOFF!
NEW Chemistry PROJECT in Pre-Funding!
Chemistry teacher Mr. Mesiouris
has never before been funded on DonorsChoose. His classroom needs a new Dell laptop to modernize instruction.  Please type LIFTOFF in the box marked promo or gift code on the payment page to  match donations dollar for dollar  up to $50 per donor.
*LIFTOFF is available only for teachers posting a DonorsChoose project for the very first time - and only during the first week a project is posted - so let's take full advantage of this one-time-only, time-limited opportunity!

3 Donors So Far!
TONER CARTRIDGES for MATH!
Ms. Fischer's printer is super popular with students and other Math teachers. They need new toner cartridges to keep the printer available for use.  Fun fact: the printer was also a DonorsChoose project.)  To donate, please click:  http://bit.ly/lagfischer1

15 Donors So Far!
LAPTOPS for STEM CLASSROOMS!
Mr. Rahman's Chemistry students
need laptops and a charging cart.

LEARNING SKILLS CLASS NEEDS LAPTOPS and CHARGING CART!
Mr. Harkness teaches Learning Skills classes. Help his students stay on track with 12 new HP Chromebooks and a Luxor charging cart.

Mark your calendars for November 28th!  Celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday has become one of the world's most generous days of the year. All day on November 28th, every time donors support a classroom on DonorsChoose, they'll be entered into a drawing to receive a $5,000 DonorsChoose.org gift card to support classroom projects. But that's not all; the teachers that donors support will also be entered into a separate drawing, also for a $5,000 DonorsChoose.org gift card.

Thank you!

DonorsChoose  is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.

In the past three years, 100% of our faculty's requests have been funded by parents and other generous supporters.

DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs. bit.ly/dcmatch

Attention Parents of Seniors:

T he FAFSA and CSS forms for 2018-2019 are open. All families with seniors attending college in the fall of 2018 and applying for need based aid and/or loans from the federal government, need to submit the FAFSA, and many will also need to submit the CSS Profile.

Before you enter your FAFSA information, be sure to read Ms. Christine Scott's recent newsletter about common FAFSA Mistakes.

NOTE: the Deadline for submitting FAFSA and CSS profile for Early-Decision or Early-Action applications may be as early as November 1. Check the websites of the schools your student is applying to.

Be sure to go directly to the government website to fill in your FAFSA application -- any website that asks for fees to fill in your application is not a trustworthy site.

Go to  fafsa.gov to fill in your form. Click here for helpful information on filling out the form.

See also the  CSS Profile application  from the College Board.  There is a fee associated with the CSS profile of $25 for the first college, and $16 for each additional college.
