Issue 5
October 9, 2017
Dear LaGuardia Families:
We hope everyone is feeling refreshed and rejuvenated after the long weekend, and that our underclassmen are ready to tackle the PSATs on Wednesday.

You can find a comprehensive list of what the students should bring with them and how the testing and day will proceed in the Weekly Bulletin.

Meanwhile, our seniors will be partaking in the time-honored tradition of having their class and studio photos taken by the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park. Senior parents, you can find the permission slip for the photo shoot in the Bulletin. Make sure it's turned in ASAP.

As you know, we love to champion our children's academic and artistic accomplishments here in the Sunday Night News.   But, to paraphrase an old saw, behind every great student stands a great teacher.  The nominations for the Big Apple Awards are open, and we encourage you all to nominate someone at LaGuardia who has made an impact on your child.

Speaking of which, our incredibly talented faculty have an Art Show, opening this Friday at 4 pm. Please stop by the Art Gallery, located on the second floor for an opening reception with many of the artists! The exhibition continues through October 27.

Please sponsor the all-school musical, 42nd Street!  These funds are 100% earmarked for the musical and allow us to put on the professional-level production that makes the entire school proud. To sponsor, click here or email with any questions.  Please see below for more details about how you can be part of the magic!

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Linda Hahn & Kat Ramirez
PA Co-Presidents

P.S. Don't forget---we've got a great opportunity to attend the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting Ceremony by bidding on our mini-Charity Buzz Auction. But hurry! This auction closes TOMORROW, TUESDAY, October 10. Please read on for details!

As you can see, the LaG Girls Swim Team is a happy bunch even though they had a VERY excitingly close meet loss against Hunter. They came up on the short side because a few swimmers were unable to attend. The team gets another chance at this rivalry on October 13 in a three-way meet---
Hunter,  Stuyvesant and LaGuardia at Stuyvesant High School. The team has shown sportsmanship, unity and camaraderie under the leadership of their captains, Charlotte Jones and Isobel Abbot (pictured above, center front). The girls are training hard at the John Jay College pool.

11 LaGuardia Projects Funded
So Far this School Year--
Let's Make It an Even Dozen!

Wonderful news!
Funding for Ms. Sheikh's Physics project was completed today - thanks to 20 donors and a grant from Verizon! We've funded 11 teachers' project requests this academic year - bringing in nearly $15,000 in new classroom technology, supplies, and books for our students.
Now let's finish our 12th project!

A new-to-LaGuardia science teacher  is currently seeking funding for a worthy classroom project:

81% Funded!
Mr. Hold's AP Environmental Science and Living Environment Students Need Basic Classroom Supplies
Only $164 to go!
Vince Hold, a teacher new to LaGuardia, needs our help setting up his Living Environment (Biology) and  AP Environmental Science  classroom for his 160 students!
To donate to this request for classroom basics, please click:

Primary Sources for a Broader Perspective
Ms. Kingham needs primary source references for her PreAP and AP World History Classes
The books requested, World History in Documents, are a compilation of relevant primary source documents for the study of history. Ms. Kingham's students are enrolled in two different courses, PreAP World for the Freshmen and AP World for the Sophomores. These books would benefit about 170 students per day as a supplement to their textbook readings and any other sources she is able to photocopy for them.

Thank you so much for your ongoing
support and commitment to our students!

DonorsChoose  is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.

In the past three years, 100% of our faculty's requests have been funded by parents and other generous supporters.

DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs.

Junior and Senior Families: Here's a list of important college planning events from Christine Scott, LaGuardia's College Mentor/ Specialist:
October 19: College Night for Junior II. 6:00 p.m. Concert Hall.
December 19 :  JUNIORS: All About Me survey opens via Naviance.
March 1: College Planning Night for Juniors III.  6:00 p.m. Concert Hall.
Week of March 5 : College Kick Off Week for Juniors! Various locations.
March 28: College and Conservatory Fair at LaGua rdia. 6:00 p.m.

Senior Parents, to learn more about Naviance and how your child should be utilizing it right now, refer an earlier issue of the  Weekly Bulletin, on page 13.  If you have not signed up, you will be at a major disadvantage in terms of getting updates, newsletters, recommendations and other help from the guidance department. Naviance is a crucial tool to your child's college application success.

Junior families should also be signing up for Naviance now to get notices from the guidance department.

Here are the latest communications from Ms. Christine Scott, LaGuardia College Specialist, including links to College Newsletters 1-4. (PDF)
