Issue 3
September 24, 2017
Dear LaGuardia Families:
Ah, autumn in New York! Okay, so the hot weather doesn't really feel like it's the advent of fall. Yet this first long weekend of the school year does mark the start of a seasonal ritual for high school juniors and seniors: visiting colleges.

The reality of graduation and life beyond creeps up quickly. So parents of seniors, please sign up for Naviance if you haven't done so already. Naviance is a critical tool for organizing your child's college application paperwork and it's a valuable resource for connecting students to schools that match their interests and strengths.  In addition, Naviance is how Christine Scott, LaGuardia's college specialist, communicates important information with you. We've included her recent newsletters, along with some other upcoming college-related events in our new section, College Corner. You'll find this below.

We're also approaching our favorite time of the year---show season! One of the greatest perks of being a parent at LaGuardia is having a steady diet of incredible art shows and performances nearly every weekend. Once these start up, we'll need lots of help in various ways. Please make sure to sign up to volunteer by filling our very brief survey. It's a rewarding way to be part of our children's education and the school community.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Linda Hahn & Kat Ramirez
PA Co-Presidents

P.S.  We've got a great opportunity to attend the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting Ceremony by bidding on our mini-Charity Buzz Auction. Please read on!

Our teachers know best what they need to help our students thrive in their classrooms and studios, so THANK YOU so much for your continued tax-deductible support!

Mr. Blancq's Music Students Need a New iMac for Original Arrangements and Additional Parts

Please join 10 donors so far in support of
Mr. Blancq's Music classes, which need a
new iMac. Help Mr. Blancq create original arrangements and new parts for ensembles. There's always that student who doesn't have a part or has a part that needs to be fattened up, and Mr. Blancq's answer is alway to create one or beef one up. This project helps 167 instrumentalists and replaces a defunct computer.

DonorsChoose is a nonprofit organization that allows private individuals to donate to public school classroom projects. LaGuardia teachers post many project requests on DonorsChoose throughout the school year for one simple reason: the NYC Department of Education does not provide many of the materials, technology and other essentials that make LaGuardia great.

In the past three years, 100% of our faculty's requests have been funded by parents and other generous supporters.

DonorsChoose donations are eligible for most employers' matching gift programs.

Class of 2018 Parents, to learn more about Naviance and how your child should be utilizing it right now, refer to last week's Weekly Bulletin, on page 13.  If you have not signed up, you will be at a major disadvantage in terms of getting updates, newsletters, recommendations and other help from the guidance department. Naviance is a crucial tool to your child's college application success.

Come to the College Financial Aid Night TONIGHT, September 25th at 6 pm, LaGuardia Concert Hall.

Save the Date: Planning for College: Juniors and their families  will be held on October 4th at 6 pm.
Attention Parents of Seniors:
The  days are closing in on October 1st, when the FAFSA form will open. All families with seniors attending college in the fall of 2018 and applying for need based aid and/or loans from the federal government, need to submit the FAFSA.

College Money Search  is offering a two-part FAFSA webinar with a college funding professional, to review everything you need to know to fill out the FAFSA, as well as understanding how the expected family contribution (EFC) is calculated---and they'll answer personal questions too!
The dates of the next webinar is Sunday 10/8 at 8:30 pm. The price of this webinar series (including this and ability to view the previous webinar held on 9/17) is very reasonable at $9.99---the same cost of a sandwich and a drink! CLICK HERE TO REGISTER NOW!

Note that registrants will also be given access to a copy of the recording of the previous seminar held on 9/17.  In addition, they can still submit questions for either seminar, which will be answered in the subsequent webinar on Oct. 8th.

Webinar host Debbie Schwartz is the founder of Road2College and College Money Search. She is a former financial services marketing executive with over ten years educating consumers on financial products and services for all stages of their financial life. Her mission, and that of her companies, is to improve the transparency of the college funding process with better access to data, services, and education to help families find affordable options for sending students to college.

Parents and guardians of NYC public school kids can be eligible for FREE Wi-Fi at home through The New York Public Library's Library HotSpot program, designed for patrons without home internet.
