The mission of the Gold Star Luminary Initiative is to promote awareness of Gold Star Family Day and urge organizations and individuals in communities throughout the United States to light luminaries at dusk on the last Sunday of each September in honor of our fallen heroes.
Since 2007, thousands of luminaries have been lit on the last Sunday in September to honor the memories of the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation.
In the nine years since the first Gold Star Luminary Initiative events were held
, the Luminary Initiative has taken hold with individuals, groups, and organizations around the United States.
Most of us have not experienced the tragedy of losing a loved on in defense of our nation. Most of us never will. We can't relate personally or begin to imagine what that must be like. What we can do, however, is honor and recognize these families. We can thank them for the sacrifices they and their children have made on our behalf. We can let them know that, no matter what, we support and stand behind them as a country and that, if even just for a day, their burden is our burden too.
Please help spread the word and light a luminary this coming Sunday, September 25.
Sincerely,

How Your Help is Needed
In communities large and small, organizations and individuals honor these families, from citywide events to a single luminary at the end of a driveway. Community service clubs, church groups, and military organizations all participate—and they all need leaders; someone who will coordinate the day’s activities and send out the call to action.
- Will you help keep their memories alive?
- Will you light a luminary with your family?
- Will you organize an event in your community?
Gold Star Family Day is on the last Sunday of September each year. You can make a difference in your community on September 25th this year.
