National Assocation of Social Workers Conference | |
SunServe is teaming up with the Florida chapter of the National Association of Social Workers to present "Bridging the Gap," a two part training series for mental health professionals. The first event, scheduled for Thur., Sept. 15 through Sat., Sept. 17, will provide continuing education credits on basic skills and advocacy topics for mental health professionals working with LGBT clients. The second, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 11, will focus on more advanced topics, with a special focus on youth, couples, and gender issues. Mental health professionals will be able to accumulate up to 17 CEU hours between these two events. That is more than ½ the hours required for most mental health professionals to qualify for licensure renewal.

"We are delighted to have forged this partnership with NASW-FL," says Jim Lopresti, SunServe's Director of Clinical Education. "There are very few opportunities like this anywhere else in the country. We broaden the impact of SunServe by equipping other professionals with such specialized skills. Working together with NASW-FL on these projects helps in our shared goal of increasing the competencies of helping professionals in meeting the needs of our community."

From Mark's Desk
Do not forget - you are invited, as is everyone else you know, to the Open House at our New Office Space at 3212 Wilton Drive on Monday, September 12, from 6 - 8pm. Please put it on your calendar.
We are sad to announce that Helen Ferreri, the Program Director of SunServe's Noble A. McArtor Senior Center, has resigned. Helen has been with us for over 6 years and has been instrumental in bringing the center to where it is today. We will be having a "Goodbye, Good Luck and God Speed" fete for Helen on Thursday, September 8 from 5 - 7 pm at the Senior Center. Please come and help us thank Helen
On that note, Michael Norfleet, our current Activities Coordinator at the Center will become the Acting Program Director while a larger search is performed. Michael will be at Helen's fete.
Jon Frey and Bryan Ortega have joined the Youth Program as Outreach Advocates. We are excited to have their enthusiasm and energy harnessed to deliver even more and better services to LGBTQ youth in Broward County.
The intake criteria for the Senior Center are over 60 and wobbly! If you know someone who is shut in, or whose partner could use some respite during the day, have them give Michael a call. The Center's services are free and include a hot lunch! |

It's a sophisticated comedy about the "hot-young" writer-of-the-moment, Evan Wyler who captures the attention of Alexa Vere de Vere, an Auntie-Mame type woman of mystery who's made the world of celebrity her home and gives Evan, who is gay, a personalized invitation. However, once lured by the honey, he finds out that Alexa has stung many before him. All SunServe Board and Guardian Circle Members recieve a 25% discount off the regular ticket price of $35. Just go to risingactiontheatre.com and click in the tickets tab. Then, when asked, use the code Our Fund to get your discount. |

It's so hot, did someone mention ice cream?
Remembering the days when they used to shout "I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream" the seniors from the day care center brought back those days in summer when the ice cream truck came down the street to bring relief from the heat. We are now bringing the relief to the Noble A. McArtor Day Care Center. It's a real treat and is being scheduled for once a month. We would like to thank the Kona Ice Cream Truck for providing the ice cream. The seniors had a wonderful time.

GIVE YOUR OLD LAPTOP NEW LIFE!
Support our Youth Groups by donating it to SunServe!
We are looking for new or used laptops for an exciting new after school drop in program for LGBTQ youth. We are creating a safe and supportive environment for our youth, especially kids who are at risk for poor school performance or from high stress families and afraid or bullied. It's a place where kids can study, connect with other LGBTQ youth and be supported by SunServe.
