The Superior Hiking Trail Association is building a new bridge across the Red River near the Minnesota/Wisconsin border. This is an exciting new bridge design that we have never constructed before! All supplies will be delivered to the nearest road; Trail Maintenance Supervisor Larry Sampson
needs volunteers to carry these supplies to the bridge site!
Volunteers are needed on July 21, 22, and possibly July 23:
On Friday, July 21, we'll need a total of 30 volunteers to help carry supplies from the road into the bridge site, a total carry of under half a mile each way. To beat the heat, we'll be meeting at 8:30AM at Wild Valley Road Trailhead or Jay Cooke State Park (carpool meeting location for those coming from the south or who are unfamiliar with Wild Valley Road).
On Saturday, July 22, we'll need 30 volunteers to help haul more supplies into the bridge site and haul scaffolding supplies out
. We will be meeting at 8:30AM at Wild Valley Road Trailhead or 8:30AM at Jay Cooke State Park to carpool to the work site.
If the hauling project is under control, we have several other projects in the area that need volunteers, including a signage project and boardwalk project.
By Sunday, July 23, we hope to have completed all our projects in the area. If, however, something has taken longer than expected, we may still need volunteers. In the event that work is completed, we will be offering an optional guided hike for volunteers. The hike will go from Wild Valley Road to Jay Cooke State Park Visitor Center. Want to explore on your own? That's okay too!
The Superior Hiking Trail Association is providing a group campsite at Jay Cooke State Park for Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday morning breakfast and Saturday evening dinner are also provided at Jay Cooke State Park. Refreshments will be available near the bridge site on Friday and Saturday.
The trail could be wet and muddy and supplies being hauled in will be heavy.
Bring work gloves if you have them, or they will be provided. A safety talk and any required equipment will be provided. Please come prepared with lots of water and filled water bottles, insect repellent, and whatever supplies you need to spend a day in the woods.
Please e-mail me to sign up. I'll need to know:
- Which day(s) you want to volunteer
- If you'll be meeting us at Jay Cooke State Park to carpool or if you will meet us directly at Wild Valley Road
- Which night(s) you want to stay at the group campsite
- Which meal(s) you would like (and if you are a vegetarian)
- Your phone number in case we have a last-minute change of plans
Let me know if you have any questions!
