Support Our Community, Shop Local
|
The holidays are just around the corner and the mad dash to find the right gift for that special someone is under way. Shopping online for that special gift is how many people take care of their Christmas list. Many of you run down the hill and hit the big box stores and the mall. If you want to do something different, that will feed our local economy for months to come, why don't you consider shopping right here in our neighborhood.
Here are some reasons to shop locally this year. Remember that every time you spend money locally, you are impacting the economy of Twentynine Palms and the Morongo Basin. The small business you are shopping at is probably owned by someone that lives in our community. That means that the money you spend locally will be recycled back into our local economy.
Not only do locally owned businesses employ more people directly per dollar of revenue, they are the customers of other local businesses, which in turn creates an expansion of opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
Our small business culture is the heartbeat of Twentynine Palms and the Morongo Basin. While franchises and national chain stores play a role in the national economy, small businesses provide an undeniable energy and unique sentiment that is the backbone of our community life.
Shopping with local business owners offers a sincere customer-owner connection. Small business owners are experts on the product they create and sell; merchandise is carefully selected based on the customer's interests and needs, and owners will go the extra mile to guarantee personal attention to their customers.
Independent businesses build robust communities by making more local purchases and supporting vibrant town centers, which essentially reduces traffic, habitat loss, and pollution.
Before logging on to the Internet or running down the hill, visit one of our many Mom and Pop stores to find that perfect gift. Go to our website www.29chamber.org and check out our Business Directory. Click on "Filter by Category", and then click on "Retail, Goods, Services".
Until Next Week,
Mary Reeves

Black Rock Lecture Series:
Losing Ground: The Displacement of San Gorgonio Pass Cahuilla People in the 19th Century
Join author and historian, Betty Meltzer, as she discusses her book "Losing Ground" about the displacement of the San Gorgonio Pass Cahuilla People in the 19th century.
"Losing Ground" follows the history of the Cahuilla people from their first contact with missionaries in the 19th century in the Redlands area, through the Mexican rancheros until the American settlers, being used as a labor force to dig the Zanja for Redlands friars before they were moved to a reservation.
Betty is a retired English teacher and librarian at Banning High School. She and her co-author, Louis Doody, said they were inspired to write the book when they realized there was a lack of local history resources for their students. The authors were given an Award of Merit from the American Association of State and Local History for their book.
Sponsored by the Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park, this lecture will be held at the Black Rock Visitor Center, 9800 Black Rock Canyon, Yucca Valley, CA 92284 on Friday, November 20, 7 pm - 8 pm. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Desert Institute at (760) 367-5535, [email protected], or visit www.joshuatree.org.

The Farndale Christmas Carol at Theatre 29!
The Farndale ladies are renowned across the globe for their famously incompetent performances. Their bumbling charm is the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit with the hilarious Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society's Production of A Christmas Carol. This heartwarming and engagingly goofy comedy portrays the attempts of four ladies of the society and one slightly reluctant man to get through a production of Dickens' A Christmas Carol that is disaster-prone in the lovable way of small theater productions. From broken-down transportation to collapsing scenery, line mixups to infighting, the ladies soldier through the mishaps like the troopers they are, having a jolly good time along the way and bringing the audience right along with them.
The comedic "Farndale Christmas Carol" will run from November 20th through December 19th, with two Sunday matinees on November 29th and December 13th at 2:30PM. Friday and Saturday performances start at 7PM.
Ticket prices are $12 for adults, $10 for military and students with ID, and $8 for children.
Theatre 29 is located at 73637 Sullivan Road in the city of Twentynine Palms. Tickets are now available can be purchased online at www.Theatre29.org or by phone at (760) 361-4151.

An Actor's Carol at Hi-Desert Cultural Center
World Premiere! Acclaimed playwright/director Charles Evered, who has written screenplays and teleplays for Universal Pictures, Dreamworks, Paramount Pictures and NBC, is at again! -But this time with a brand new never-before-staged play that brings a warm-hearted "Monty Python-esque" crazy spoof on A Christmas Carol! Hugh Pendleton has played the role of Scrooge one too many times -the cranky actor has had it with the season's most popular story, and after a particularly humiliating performance, he's visited by three spirits of his own. A cast of four actors play seventeen characters in this raucous and good-natured send up of the holiday classic that reminds us that even the most jaded among us can find magic in the holiday season -and in the theater as well.
Tickets are available Friday December 4th-Saturday December 12th at $15-$24 per person.

Reach Out Morongo Basin officials have begun gathering homes and sponsors for the 12th Annual Parade of Homes, set to take place Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016. The annual event, which sees Reach Out Morongo Basin supporters from across the basin open their homes to curious visitors, is the Neighbors-Helping-Neighbors program's long running fundraiser bringing in thousands of dollars in ticket sales and sponsorships every year to support it's services to senior and disabled residents of the Morongo Basin.
"The generosity of owners who open their homes to us is what makes this event such a success" said Executive Director Robin Schlosser who continued "The unique qualities of each home showcase our desert community and way of life. Visitors on the tour view six homes in the Morongo Basin each with its own story."
"Growing interest and success in the recent past has homeowners eager to show their homes which range from renovated homestead cabins to astonishing architectural masterpieces. With three homes in Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley already signed on for the coming year we are seeking homes to round out the coming tour."
Homeowners are urged to call Reach Out at 760-361-1410 for information or to volunteer their homes.
In addition organizers are looking for tour and media sponsors at the following levels:
Platinum: $2,500 or more
The single platinum sponsor will receive top billing in all publicity about the home tour as well as listing on tickets, directional signs, advertising, fliers and posters and the Reach Out Morongo Basin website and newsletter.
The platinum sponsor also has the option of nominating one home for the tour, with the caveat that the home should be of historical or architectural interest and that the chairman reserves the right to choose homes for the tour.
Docents at each home will wear company shirts and hats, assuming they are supplied by the sponsor and will display company brochures during parade hours.
The platinum sponsor will receive 20 free tickets.
Gold: $1,000 or more
Each gold sponsor will also be the floral centerpiece sponsor for one home on the tour, with their name featured prominently in the display.
Gold sponsors will also be listed in advertising, fliers, posters and on the Reach Out Morongo Basin website and newsletter and will receive eight free tickets.
Silver: $500 or more
Silver sponsors will be listed in advertising, on fliers and posters and on the Reach Out Morongo Basin website and newsletter. They will receive four free tickets.
Bronze: $250 or more
Bronze sponsors will be listed in fliers, posters and the Reach Out Morongo Basin website and will receive two free tickets.
For more details, call Reach Out Morongo Basin at (760) 361-1410
