The Arc of Ohio's Newest Service!

The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities issued  Guidance for considering electronic equipment purchases with waiver funds. on June 7, 2011.  DODD recognized then that technology had advanced significantly and was now capable in the assisting in activities of daily living, communication; and, most importantly, providing the means to remain in the community; AND remain cost effective.

The challenge has been that Adaptive Equipment has typically been provided by Medical Supplies or other Providers of Service who do not typically sell electronic equipment such as iPads, Tablets, specialized keyboards, touch screens and software, just to name a few.

The Arc of Ohio therefore explored how it could best support individuals and their families; and, has become a certified provider of Adaptive Equipment through the Individual Options (IO), Level 1 and Transitions Developmental Disabilities (TDD) Wavers, specializing in the provision of Electronic Equipment.

The Ohio Knights of Columbus Foundation has made a generous donation to The Arc as seed money so that we may actively provide this equipment at very competitive prices.

These products are available for purchase through the various Waivers, given the following guidelines, but we have also been able to provide this equipment in our trial run at the discretion of local County Boards of DD, Providers and Families.

1. The equipment addresses one or more of the following needs directly related to enabling

the individual:

a.) to perform activities of daily living,

b.) to remain in the community, or

c.) to perceive, control, or communicate with the environment in which they live.

In addition, documents (e.g. professional assessments) are available to support the need

and its effectiveness.

2. The need for, use, and projected outcomes of the specified equipment are stated in the

Individual Service Plan.

3. The equipment is not to be used by individuals who do not have a developmental

disability.

4. The equipment, when weighed against other specialized devices, is the most efficient and

effective option available.

5. The equipment is not able to be used for recreational or entertainment purposes.

6. If the item can be purchased through the Medicaid State Plan, it cannot be purchased

through DODD-operated waivers. (The Medicaid State Plan does not currently allow for the purchase of equipment such as iPads so a denial determination is not necessary.)
