SUSTAINABILITY E-NEWSLETTER
Introducing Toby Cain!
Toby, what do you do at Luther College?
I just started working as the college's Sustainability Coordinator! Come visit me on the third floor of Valders at the Center for Sustainable Communities. I'll be collaborating with students, faculty, and staff as we work towards our goal of carbon neutrality at Luther College by 2030.

What did you do before you came to Luther?
I've lived in Iowa for nearly 10 years! I first moved here in 2008 to attend Grinnell College. I'm so happy to be on Luther's campus because it reminds me of my time at Grinnell. I played college tennis, started a beekeeping club, lived in our school's version of Sustainability House, and managed the student craft fair. I've lived in Decorah for five years now, working at Seed Savers Exchange, the Iowa Organic Association, and Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF). I'm excited to build on my past experiences to help folks connect with sustainability here at Luther!

How do you spend your time?
You'll probably see me around town! I hang out at the Clay Studio, I'm on the board of ArtHaus, and I'm at the Co-op almost every day. For the past few years I've been really politically active with several local campaigns, the Iowa Farmers Union, and the National Young Farmers Coalition. I also help my family run a small antiques shop in Colorado! My favorite thing to do in Decorah is to go thrift shopping. Feel free to email me to connect!
Luther Serves October 20th
Luther students, groups, and organizations are joining to give back to the Decorah community this fall at Luther Serves! Campus Ministries has set up this annual day of service to help local residents with yard work, leaf raking, light housework, and other fall chores. On Saturday, October 20th, Luther students are invited to dedicate three hours to help out from 9am-12pm and/or 1pm-4p.m. There is no charge for residents to participate, but donations are accepted. This year, donations will go to support ELCA Hurricane relief for Hurricane Florence. Sign up today on the  Campus Ministries Luther Serves Google Doc!
Poetry and Place
You are invited to participate in the Luther Land Care Outreach Program’s Poetry and Place Contest! Explore Luther and expand your own creativity by heading to one of Luther’s 6 natural areas, writing a poem about the landscape or following a prompt available on the Luther Natural Areas website , and submitting your work there by January 15th, 2019. To learn more, plan on attending the Informational Kick Off Event in Valders 206 on Tuesday October 9th during Shadow Block. If you have any questions or concerns please email Anila Bano and/or Nikita Daly.
Sophmore Study Away Scholarship Opportunity
On October 24, from 7-8:30pm all sophomores are invited to a study-away scholarship giveaway in Peace Dining Room! Come hear stories from other students who have been transformed by their study away experiences. All sophomores attendees are eligible to win one of three $1000 scholarships toward your own study away experience! Pre-registration is required by 12pm noon on October 19th. Spots are limited so register early! Snacks will be provided.
Coffee and Conversation: Here we go again!
On Tuesday, September 25th the Center for Sustainable Communities hosted our first Coffee and Conversation. From 9:30am-10:45am outside of the main entrance to the Union, Sustainability Educators asked trivia questions about the CSC and Luther’s sustainability practices in exchange for coffee or hot tea, only in reusable mugs of course, and other fun sustainable prizes. The event was very successful, with over 50 student, faculty, and staff participants stopping by to have a chat with our sustainability educators and enjoy tea and coffee. We hope everybody learned something new! Our next Coffee and Conversation event will be on October 23rd during Shadow Block outside the Union or in the first floor of Union, weather depending. Hope to see you -and your reusable mug- there!
Sustainability Tip
Have you thought about how you are getting home or to your destination for Fall Break? Luther offers two great services that can help cut down on the number of cars on the road. The Luther College Ridesharing Facebook group connects people who need rides and those who can give them. Post if you need ride home or have extra space in your car. Additionally, you can purchase a ticket for one of Luther’s shuttle buses which run through cities across the Upper Midwest . Tickets can be bought at the Box Office or on the Box Office website. Make sure to get your tickets early - no sales will be made 24 hours before the departure time! These options not only cut down on air pollution and the number of cars on the road but also can foster new friendships and create new memories. Stay safe and sustainable on your journeys!!
Staff Spotlight
 Perry Halse
Perry Halse is a Grounds Crew member who helps coordinate the plant giveaway that many of you experienced last week! Grounds Crew is made up of four staff members: Paul Frana, Larry Moen, Doug Craft, and Perry, along with a “small army” of student workers. If you see any of the Grounds Crew or Perry around campus, be sure to tell them thanks! Perry runs Landscaping at Luther. He is charged with maintaining and expanding the beautiful plants that Luther is known for - both outside around campus and inside the academic buildings. During the winter, Perry and students care for plants inside the Valders Greenhouse. These clippings are propagated from plants all around campus and tended to with care and patience all winter long.
