Aksum: A New Place to Relax and Indulge on Baltimore Avenue
by Samantha Lazar A long time coming, Aksum has officially opened its doors on a quiet stretch of Baltimore Avenue. The unique space, formed by merging two separate storefronts, is lined with windows along the sidewalk which swing open to welcome the summer air and encourage people-watching. The restaurant bills itself as a "Modern Mediterranean Kitchen and Hookah Lounge," but the menu is more eclectic and inspired than that conveys, taking strong cues from Middle Eastern cuisine and even bits of inspiration from Mexico and America. VIEUX FARKA TOURE + KYO DAIKO Vieux Farka Touré is a Malian singer/guitarist and son of Grammy-winning Malian musician Ali Farka Touré, one of the uncontested trailblazers of African music. Vieux's critically-acclaimed music is a generational bridge connecting American and African blues music and culture. Vieux's 2011 album "The Secret" which "slays" according to Rolling Stone Magazine features guest appearances from Dave Matthews, Derek Trucks, John Scofield and the last collaboration between Vieux and his late father, Ali. Opening this evening's event will be a heart-pounding performance from Kyo Daiko, Philadelphia's only Japanese-style drumming crew.

BILLY MARTIN & FRIENDS + JAY SAND Join us for this very special performance led by the dynamic percussionist Billy Martin of Medeski Martin and Wood, one of the most popular and vibrant modern instrumental ensembles that have performed to packed houses from Budokan to Bonnaroo. With results ranging from the exploratory to the downright funky, Martin has performed with everyone from Chuck Mangione to the Lounge Lizards. Philadelphia's Jay Sand opens the final Summer Series concert with a performance focused on encouraging kids to explore the world by enjoying global music, rhythms and movement.
The Rotunda and UCD are also pleased to announce special deals and outdoor eating in conjunction with the Summer Series at City Tap House, 3925 Walnut Street. Between 6-10pm, City Tap House will be offering house-made grilled sausages, hamburgers and hot dogs on their patio in addition to $3 Yards draughts and other drink specials. |
