From our Artistic Director:
Summer 2016 Challenge

Dear families,

As the school year comes to an end, so do many of the incentives to keep practicing, such as lessons, concerts, and seeing other SuzukiMusic students. As a little extra motivation, I'm inviting all students to participate in a summer playing challenge!

This summer, try to appreciate how much you have grown with your instrument in the past year by playing a piece that you learned at the end of last year, and one that you learned at the end of this year. If this is your first year playing an instrument, think about something you learned at the beginning of this year, and now play what you know and your new piece at the end of the year. Do you hear the difference? All that practicing and effort has taken you a long way!

Click here  for a certificate you can print and put in your home to show this great accomplishment.

Kiwanis Update
Congratulations to all Participants!

A special congratulations to our Senior Guitar Ensemble who were invited to perform at the Kiwanis Highlights Concert again this year.  When offered the spot in the Highlights concert they were told that groups are rarely invited two years in a row.

A special congratulations to our Senior Flute Ensemble, who were winners of the Ottawa Flute Association Trophy and the Suzuki Flute Association Scholarship.

Our Volunteers of the Year
Every year we select one Parent volunteer and one Community volunteer as our volunteers of the year, people who go above and beyond to help our school be its best. We have so many dedicated volunteers and we appreciate each and everyone of you.

Parent Volunteer of the Year
Danielle and Steve Dezort
We would like to thank Danielle and Steve for their countless hours of volunteering for our school. Danielle and Steve sign up to help with multiple events throughout the year - class reps, Play In, Viva Suzuki, Orchestra, and more.  They make themselves available at a moments notice to pinch hit where needed.  We are so grateful for their cheerful willingness to share their time, creativity and ideas with our school.

Community Volunteer of the Year
Jessica Taylor
We would like to thank
third year University of Ottawa A rts and Communication student,  Jessica Taylor, for sharing her technical expertise with us this year.  Jessica redesigned and updated our school brochure. She also designed our Viva Suzuki Poster for this year and created a publicity video for our school, to be revealed soon! Thank you Jessica for your help marketing our school this year.

Viva Suzuki 2016
Growing Together, Through Music

This year's Viva Suzuki, MC'd by graduating students Amanda Bergin and Cosmos Zhao led us in:
The search for Luke Skywalker, a Suzuki Star Wars variation.
We travelled through space in our search for Luke, hearing beautiful guitar, cello, viola, flute and violin music as we went and culminating in a set of adorable Padewans leading us in a Star Wars Medley.
A huge thank you to our collaborative pianist Liko, all the faculty, volunteers, and students for making this event a great finale to our school year.

Spotlight on This Years SuzukiMusic Scholarship Winner!
Brayden Vasudev

Congratulations to Brayden Vasudev, this year's SuzukiMusic Scholarship winner.  We had a number of excellent essays to review this year and we applaud all our scholarship nominees.

Here is an excerpt from  Brayden's essay:

The 2015/2016  theme for the Suzuki School of Music is "Growing Together, Through  Music", and when I reflect upon the major influences of my life to date, music immediately  comes to mind. It has been a presence throughout my life; helping me to make sense of my  life and to connect with others in a meaningful and human way. While music has contributed  to my formative years by developing my intelligence, it has also affected me in a more  personal way by helping me to evolve into a more engaged and responsible citizen of the  world.
I am certain that through many years of music, and specifically within the Suzuki  program, I have grown, both individually, and together with the musical community around me.

Congratulations Brayden, we wish you all the best for the future.

James Ehnes Play In

Last January,  virtuoso violinist  James Ehnes announced that he would tour Canada as part of his 40th Birthday Celebration.

His release said, "As the milestone of my 40th birthday approached, it struck me that I could give myself and my family no better gift than the opportunity to explore this great nation from West to East, North to South. On the tour I will visit every Province and Territory, reconnecting with the many Canadians who have supported me throughout my career and meeting new friends along the way."

James started his tour in Ottawa.  Having James Ehnes perform for us in Ottawa was great news, but it got better: on April 27, 100 violin students (20 from SuzukiMusic selected by a committee of violin teachers) had the chance to be up close and personal with both James and the Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable David Johnston at beautiful Rideau Hall.   James would kick off his tour with a giant Play-In featuring violin students from across the Ottawa-Gatineau area. Our own accompanist, Liko, was invited to provide the accompaniment for the play-in part of the event. James' personal accompanist, Andrew Armstrong, would afterwards join him to wow us with their mastery.

The day of the event started early as 100 students with their parent chaperones made the long and lovely walk up the road from Sussex Gate to be greeted by friendly staff at Rideau Hall. Violins were tuned, guests found their seats and students lined up in Play-In style flanked by a wall of media photographers to capture the day.

The festivities were kicked off by a procession including the Governor General and James , followed by O Canada.  The air was electric with excitement and anticipation as James reassured the young violinists that they were to relax and have fun, all the while putting his bow to the 1715 "Marsick" Stradivarius violin he calls his own!

James and the students played through repertoire from Books 1 to 4; finishing with the lovely Vivaldi a minor Concerto.  Following this, we were treated to a performance by James and Andrew; a question/answer time, a meet-and-greet with lots of photos taken, a reception and then a tour of Rideau Hall. Most of the students were thrilled to see bananas growing in the solarium.

The day ended with a surprise gift of a CD for each family, featuring th e music that James and Andrew would perform across Canada in the coming months. What a great day!
