Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year!

Fall is in the air,  a new school year has begun and we would like to give a warm welcome to our new and returning students and families to SuzukiMusic.

We are looking forward to sharing a special year of learning, music and friendship with our students and their families.

A message from our AD, Michelle Iznardo:

Dear families,
Welcome to a new school year with SuzukiMusic! As part of the artistic programming, we have a school-wide theme each year, which we try to incorporate in performances and activities. This year, our theme is "Musical Mosaic in Canada", in honor of Canada's 150 th ann iversary. This will be a great opportunity to celebrate Canada's richness through our music. The diversity of cultures and art gives us strength and forms a big part of our identity as Canadians. At SuzukiMusic, each student contributes to form a part of this large mosaic that we all cherish.  This year, let's represent the exciting variety that exists in our school and share our music from the heart.

"Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart."
Shinichi Suzuki

Faculty Benefit Concert 2016
Mark your calendars!

This year's Faculty Benefit Concert to raise money for the Bursary Fund will take place on:

Our dedicated faculty donate their time to rehearse and perform for us. This is an excellent opportunity for students to see their teachers in action and for the general public to enjoy a high quality concert with high caliber musicians working together and raising money for a great cause.

As the concert takes place the day before Halloween, children (and adults too!) are welcome to come in costume.

Parent Education Corner

As we find ourselves back in the daily routines of work, school, music practice and so many other commitments, lets take a moment to look back on some pearls of wisdom found on the Parent Education page of our SuzukiMusic website.

The 7 S's of Practice
  1. Structure - Consider the structure of your home life and set realistic goals for practising. Establishing regular practise habits makes things run smoother. Make the time a mutual decision with older students. Decide on the consequences for YOU and your child if the practise is not carried out at the agreed time. Practice on the day of your lesson! A huge amount of memory loss occurs within 24 hours, which is why your child can no longer do something at home, that they did for their teacher during the lesson!!!
  2. Supplies - Have instrument and other materials in good working order and in a pleasant, convenient place to use them.
  3. Strategy - Have a predetermined goal. Goals are concrete, measurable and related to a definite time period.
  4. State - The state we are in affects our ability to learn. Postpone practise if you can see that one of you is not able to handle it. Fake it - try to create a better state for the session. Focus on positive things.
  5. Style - We all have a dominant sensory mode: auditory, visual, or kinesthetic. Try to work out what your child's preferred learning style is, and play to their strength. If something is not working with your child one way, try another.
  6. Success - Success makes you want to do it some more. It sparks positive emotions. Small, frequent successful steps for practice.
  7. Self-Esteem - At the end of every practice session you want to nurture your child's self-worth above all.
