It's a World of Blues in our Own Backyard

You don't have to be a fan of the blues to appreciate the first order of talent on display in these next few days.
But, if you are - you're in blues heaven!

Norwich is the epicenter, with Southside Johnny's performance in the park on Thursday, followed by the Chenango Blues Fest this Friday and Saturday, with some of the hottest acts playing today, including Samantha Fish, Toronzo Cannon, The Cash Box Kings and Elvin Bishop's Big Fun Trio!

But, Norwich doesn't have a monopoly on the blues.  The Cooperstown Blues Express continues its funkified, soulful  journey this Saturday.  It boards in Milford and makes a three hour loop to Cooperstown and back.  If you haven't been, it's a must.

And, for good measure, there's a blues show on the radio this Saturday, you might enjoy.  Nationally syndicated, Oneonta's own Blue Light Central can be heard at 8pm on WZOZ.

Beyond that, there's a wealth of other music styles being offered.  Theater.  Performances.  Gallery shows.  A county fair...

If you're looking for entertainment this weekend, you won't be blue.

(Or maybe you will.)

Enjoy!

We'll see you next Thursday.

Song of America: Teacher Workshop with The Hampsong Foundation
Would you like to connect the arts with the humanities in a more integral way in your classroom? The two-day Song of America workshop offers an interdisciplinary exploration of American history and culture through two artistic forms: classic song (poetry set to music) and visual art (as represented by the holdings of the Fenimore Art Museum). Educators will engage in hands-on activities, participate in interactive presentations, and experience live performances of music as well as of pieces in the museum collection. The workshop will culminate in the preparation of lesson plans and activities specific to the grades and subjects of participating educators which integrate the arts with humanities topics. Ideal for K-12 Language Arts, English, Social Studies, and Performing Arts Educators. Special topics will include Native American culture, Alexander Hamilton/Early America, the Civil War, North American folk movements, and African American history of the 20th century.

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes
Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes first achieved prominence in the mid-1970s, emerging from the same New Jersey Shore music scene as his now legendary contemporary and friend Bruce Springsteen. Southside's first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home, This Time It's for Real, and Hearts of Stone, were produced by band co-founder Steven Van Zandt (E Street Band, The Sopranos), and largely featured songs written by Van Zandt and/or Springsteen. The Van Zandt-written "I Don't Want To Go Home" became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. In 1982 Rolling Stone Magazine voted Hearts of Stone among the top 100 albums of the 1970s and 1980s. With their classic blend of hard-core R&B and street-level rock, molten grooves, soulful guitar licks and blistering horn section, Johnny and his Jukes continue to put their unique stamp on the Jersey Shore sound, while recalling the glory years of Otis Redding and similar Stax Records titans.

The Suitcase Junket
The Suitcase Junket is Matt Lorenz: artist, tinkerer, swamp yankee, one-man band. His is the road-worn voice rising over the grind of a tube-amped dumpster guitar, and the wild double pitches of throat singing. From Lorenz' penchant for thrift and ingenuity comes original rock anthems, mountain ballads, blues manifestos, and dance-hall festivity. It is magnificent, rousing, image-driven songwriting, laid out on instruments built of broken bottles, thrift store forks, dried bones, gas cans, shoes, saw blades, a toy keyboard, salvaged instruments, and an overhead compartment worth of luggage.

War, Words, Dance
Bright Hill's 26th anniversary brings veterans of war, professional dance choreographers, high school student artists, writers & Shakespeare together for exploration, collaboration, & ultimately, a performance held for the general public of upstate NY at The Walton Theatre, in Walton, NY. Collaborators include the not-for-profit organizations Lake Arts Project & Feast of Crispian. Post-deployment combat veterans, high school student writers, and visual artists will collaborate in a series of acting, writing and creative workshops; the goal is to facilitate the interaction of students and veterans in order to generate ideas for creating visual art, poetry, and dance. Results of those workshops will be choreographed into dance works by professional choreographers, and taught to student dancers who will perform the final pieces at the Walton Theatre. This collaboration will result in high-impact works that will carry the messages of the veterans stories, transmuted through young students voices and art.

Rossini's comic bel canto masterpiece The Barber of Seville will be presented in a production directed by Francesca Zambello and conducted by Glimmerglass Festival Music Director Joseph Colaneri. She is the mysterious ward of the elderly and foolish Dr. Bartolo who plans to marry her himself. Laughs and hilarity ensue as Figaro and the Count scheme against their adversaries.
