Dancin' Under the Stars

What could be better?

One of our favorite events of the summer takes place THIS Saturday night at the West Kortright Center.

It's their annual Gala Dance Under the Stars, and this year may be the best yet!

Do you know Electro-Swing?
Well, imagine the most infectious, compelling, danceable music you've ever heard, and then multiply that by two.

We'll be there.
Hope to see you, too!

We'll see you next Thursday.

The Old Main & Comic-Con Night
Hailing from the foothills of the Adirondack mountains in upstate New York, The Old Main has drawn favorable comparisons to bands such as The Avett Brothers ,The Band, and Dawes while retaining a sound and style uniquely their own. They've been called Folk/Rock, Adirondack Folk, foot stomping Folk, alt-Americana, and all sorts of other things. But regardless of the adjective and/or categorization used, they've developed a voice all their own through their high energy live performances and the raw acoustic sound created through their use of acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, upright bass, drums, and ringing vocal harmonies.

Honey Island Swamp Band
Honey Island Swamp Band's music has been described as "Bayou Americana", with timeless songs from Wilkinson & Mulé, highlighted by Mulé's searing guitar, Wilkinson's sure-handed mandolin, and 4-part vocal harmonies, all anchored by the powerful groove of Price & Paul's Louisiana stomp rhythm section. The addition of Trevor Brooks on Hammond B-3 organ to the HISB family in 2010 has rounded out the band's sound, which draws from a variety of influences in the world of roots music, including artists such as Lowell George & Little Feat, The Band, Taj Mahal, Gram Parsons, Jerry Garcia, Johnny Cash, Jimmy Reed, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, and New Orleans' own Earl King and Dr. John.

Upstate Rubdown Concert & Dinner
Upstate Rubdown returns to Origins for our third annual dinner & concert! "Pulling from the greatest corners of American music, this group has the power to get feet moving with or without amplification. Like fresh-farmed vegetables, their music is as organic as it is good for you. From foot-stomping bass, highlighted by the slap of a cajon, to the familiar strums of the mandolin over a wailing saxophone - there's so much going on instrumentally that when the harmonious lead vocalists chime in, the result is nothing short of a homegrown hurricane of sound." - Otis Mountain Get Down

The Barber of Seville
Rossini's comic bel canto masterpiece The Barber of Seville will be presented in a production directed by Francesca Zambello and conducted by Glimmerglass Festival Music Director Joseph Colaneri. With its famed overture that inspired the appropriately named cartoon "Rabbit of Seville" from Looney Tunes, the opera tells the story of Count Almaviva, a young nobleman who allies with Figaro, the titular barber, in order to woo Rosina. She is the mysterious ward of the elderly and foolish Dr. Bartolo who plans to marry her himself. Laughs and hilarity ensue as Figaro and the Count scheme against their adversaries.

"Over There" with Eric Owens
Since the very first stirrings of revolution, music has been an outlet for soldiers and civilians alike. The treasured anthems "Over There" (George M. Cohan) and "We'll Meet Again" (Vera Lynn) were heard on the same radio waves as "Goodnight Saigon" (Billy Joel) and "Letters Home from the Garden of Stone" (Everlast). 2018 Artist in Residence Eric Owens leads us in a tribute to veterans with songs that have inspired, comforted and cheered in times of war.

Othello
Othello, one of Shakespeare's most famously controversial tragedies, arrives in Cooperstown this summer, presented by Fenimore Art Museum's Glimmer Globe Theatre. Set at the height of the Venetian Army, the play follows Othello, a Venetian general of Moorish descent, as his relationship with an unfaithful and embittered ensign, Iago, continues to decay. Through careful manipulation of Othello's social and professional circles, the jealous Iago hatches a despicable plot to undermine every bit of Othello's credibility, and destroy everything he holds dear. Exploring enduring themes of love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge, and repentance, the title role in this production will be played by a female, further highlighting questions of gender and sexual identity that run throughout.
