It begins in the mid-morning and continues until 5 pm on the open, grassy summit of Campbell Road in Cherry Valley. In every direction, children - running frantically, arms outstretched, towing long ribbons of string behind them; sometimes in an upward arc to the clouds, often in a lateral line with the ground. Parents, relatives, and older siblings help as they can, and eventually the sky fills with kites of every size and description. Music (and the smell of barbecue) fills the air below, but above, the blue skies of Cherry Valley belongs to Norman Rockwell and one of the more uniquely homespun entertainments of the early fall. The Cherry Valley Kite Festival! I love it. And grandson at my side, I'll be there. Just one of so many things to do this weekend...
We'll see you next Friday.

Chiara String Quartet Bartk by Heart Chiara String Quartet has established itself as among America's most respected ensembles, lauded for its "highly virtuosic, edge-of-the-seat playing" (Boston Globe). The quartet's recent international travels have included extensive tours of China, Korea, and Sweden as well as appearances at the American Academy in Rome and the Montreal Chamber Music Festival, and a performance of Steve Reich's Different Trains in Munich. Harkening back to a tradition that is centuries old and still common among soloists, the ensemble has adapted to performing sans printed sheet music. They will perform Bartk's string quartets Nos. 2, 4, and 6 from memory. For more information: www.westkc.org
