Building Synergy Between Schools
Synergy Academies' mission is to create and share solutions that eliminate the achievement gap. As part of our mission to share out, we are committed to working with educators from all school settings to share ideas and best practices for the benefit of all kids. We host quarterly "Let's Trade Secrets" educator workshops, and work in partnership with the district schools we share campuses with. We know that  together we are better.
Sharing Recess Secrets
Synergy Charter Academy started their system of "organized play" at recess 12 years ago. At a "Let's Trade Secrets" workshop in the fall, Synergy leaders shared how they structure recess time and activities so that students learn skills and sportsmanship, and have fun! Leaders from Quincy Jones Elementary School and Playworks also shared their best practices. The workshop was attended by over 25 school leaders, staff members, and parents from charter schools, district schools, and independent schools. Synergy's efforts to share out were recently featured on the Walton Family Foundation website.
Partnering for Greater Engagement
Synergy Kinetic Academy and their partner schools on the Dr. Julian Nava Learning Academy campus were awarded a joint grant by the Riordan Foundation to fund a special teacher training program. All three schools identified a need to improve student engagement in classrooms, and teachers recently volunteered to attend a Kagan Professional Development workshop, paid for by the grant. Leaders from all three schools will conduct classroom observations this semester to see how teachers are implementing the techniques to better engage students in classroom activities.
Opening the Dialogue
Earlier this month, Synergy convened a group of 40 educators from charter and district schools to come together to talk about ways to better serve all students. The "Let's Trade Secrets" workshop focused on the question, is there a connection between designations of Long Term English Learner and Specific Learning Disability? Lindsay Young, an LAUSD high school teacher, shared specific strategies she has developed for teaching vocabulary, and Sommer Jones, Synergy's Director of Special Education, shared ways that Synergy is looking at data and creating a pilot program focused on visualizing vocabulary.
