Geoff Mitchell - USOC Coach of the Year Award
Squash pro Geoff Mitchell was honored last month with the United States Olympic Committee National Coach of the Year Award. Dent Wilkens, the senior vice president of operations at US Squash, presented Mitchell with the award on the ASB GlassCourt at the 2016 Delaware Investments U.S. Open.
Mitchell, the head pro at The Chatham Club in New Jersey, has been a stalwart teaching pro for more than a quarter century. A top player himself, often ranked nationally as high as #1 in his age group, Mitchell has developed hundreds of juniors into national champions and intercollegiate team and Team USA members. Since 2012, he has been the board chair of StreetSquash Newark, the New Jersey-based urban academic mentoring program.
Mitchell has been a key visionary in American coaching. Beginning in 2013, he has been one of seven regional coaches helping guide the creation and implementation of the US Squash regional squad structure. In January 2015, Mitchell led the US Squash-sponsored American team to the British Junior Open.
US Squash has given out the USOC National Coach of the Year Award since 1998 when Paul Assaiante first received it. Other winners include Demer Holleran, Mark Allen, Adam Hamill, Natalie Grainger, and last year's winner Jim Stephens.
Congratulations, Geoff, we are so proud of you!
