President's Message
 Election Day

Happy Election Day! Today many decisions will be made that will have direct and indirect impacts on the nations, our state, and our small community of Eagle Rock.

The good news is that you have an opportunity to participate in making those decisions. I hope that everyone will take a small slice of time out of their busy days and head to their polling place to cast their ballot. If you are not sure where your polling place is you can look it up on the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk website by simply entering your address. If you have misplaced or not received your voter information guide, you can get a digital copy of it at the California Secretary of State General Election website. Again, please get out there and vote!

In other election news, the TERA board has voted to make additional changes to the board officers. In September, we installed a new president and vice president. Last month, the board installed a new treasurer as well as a new secretary.

The secretary position has been vacant for a few months, in part because transcribing meeting minutes and keeping the records of the board can often require a lot of time and effort. Stepping into the secretary position is Joan MacNeil, TERA's longtime treasurer. Joan has done an excellent job at safeguarding TERA's finances and she will bring the same level of commitment and dedication to the office of secretary.

Stepping into Joan's old position of treasurer is our newest board member, Robert Arnold. While Robert is new to the board, he brings an extensive budget and finance background to table. He will definitely be able to continue on with the the great work that Joan was doing.

These changes different members to provide fresh insights from a new perspective. They changes, I believe, strengthen TERA and allow us to continue to serve you well into the future.

The current TERA board:
Greg Merideth, President
Luis Lpez, Vice President
Joan MacNeil, Secretary
Robert Arnold, Treasurer
Bob Gotham, Immediate Past President
Maria Nazario
Jay Platt

Take Back the Boulevard Update

Take Back the Boulevard Update

Although the Colorado Boulevard Vision Plan has been completed, the work of Take Back the Boulevard (TBTB) team continues.

The standing committee has been scaled down in size to make it more agile. The committee is continuing its work to make Colorado Boulevard a complete street - one that safe and accessible for motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users.

To that end, in the coming months, the TBTB team will be examining ways to obtain funding to put in traffic and pedestrian elements, such as:

  • Traffic Signals
  • Bus Stop Amenities (furniture, shade, trash cans, sidewalk cleaning, etc.)
  • Lighting, especially pedestrian-oriented
  • Pedestrian refuge islands in medians
  • Turn pockets in new and existing medians
  • New medians on Colorado Boulevard, west of Eagle Rock Boulevard
  • Bump-outs (curb extensions), especially where they would facilitate pedestrians in the area of bus stops.
  • New median treatment at Trader Joe's which will force right turns with a u-turn opportunity further east on Colorado.
  • "Way to Signage" such as "Welcome to Eagle Rock" monuments
  • New cross-walks, especially in the area of bus stops.
Look for updates in our e.letters as this project progresses. Special thanks to board member Bob Gotham for the update on this project.

Press Conference Opposing Scholl Canyon Landfill Expansion
Back in August, Councilmember Jos Huizar and TERA sponsored a joint press conference (along with many other community organizations) opposing the City of Glendale's proposed expansion of the Scholl Canyon Landfill. The landfill is located at the very northern end of Figueroa Street and is only accessible through Eagle Rock. The landfill produces many undesirable effects such as noise, pollution, traffic, and wear and tear on Eagle Rock streets.

TERA paid to have a videographer record the press conference and produce a video that could be used in our ongoing campaign against the proposed expansion. You can watch the video by clicking here or on the video link above.

Colorado Boulevard Specific Plan

On September 30th, Councilmember Jos Huizar, in his role as chair of the Planning and Land Use Management Subcommittee of the City Council, directed the City Planning Department to eliminate the hours of operation restrictions contained in the Colorado Boulevard Specific Plan. Currently, new businesses are required to operate within the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 p.m., while older businesses are "grandfathered" in and are allowed to have extended hours. Eliminating the hours restrictions will place all businesses on a more level playing field.

As part of the process of amending the specific plan, the City Planning department will be holding an open house/public hearing regarding the removal of the hours restrictions. Those of you that live within 500 feet of the specific plan area should already have received notices in the mail.

The open house portion of the event will allow an opportunity for people to learn more about the proposed amendment, to ask questions, and provide input. During the public hearing portion, a hearing office will conduct a formal hearing and will take public testimony and written correspondence regarding the proposed amendment. The hearing will deal only with that proposed amendment and no decision will be made at this meeting.

The event is scheduled as follows:

Open House and Public Hearing
Center for the Arts Eagle Rock
2225 Colorado Boulevard
November 19, 2014
Open House: 6:00 p.m.
Public Hearing : 7:00 p.m.
