This chakra is our link, our connection to the vast cosmic consciousness, that level of being that is beyond the human experience. As such, it is more abstract than the other chakras and less is known about it. Although it is said to be closely related to the brow chakra, there seems to be controversy as to its associations. It corresponds to vibrations of even higher frequency, and thus represents information that is even closer to the ultimate truth. Individuals who are more enlightened have a greater access to such information, while for most people, it is out of reach. It is possible that some less enlightened individuals, who may be blocked in lower chakras, can have an extraordinary grasp of such information. Such a person may experience turmoil or confusion until the lower chakras are opened. The crown chakra is the location where the purest, strongest currents of prana or cosmic energy stream into the body, with great healing potential. An open crown chakra allows this energy to stimulate the pineal gland, to charge and inform the body and the mind.
- Emotional, Mental & Spiritual Aspects/Issues: Balance at this level means that duality is transcended and one embraces universal consciousness. One experiences knowledge or understanding of divine truth and bliss, with little or no illusion to block the way. One lives in faith, trusting insight and inner guidance. Living in a fast paced, materialistic society can be a real challenge for such an individual. Witnessing the workings of a society that is lacking in compassion is difficult because, at this level, one becomes less concerned with the ego and feels a great responsibility to all of mankind. Increased humanitarian concern and selflessness is accompanied by an ability to see the bigger picture.
At the same time, one often feels an alienation from the rest of society, an inability to relate to other individuals. One may feel very alone, depressed and in spiritual crisis. Previously held values, religious convictions and definitions of divinity may be suddenly called into question as new visions of reality come into focus. Such an awakening can be very distressing. One of the most effective ways of achieving balance at this level is to practice some form of daily devotion, such as meditating, praying, or anything that brings stillness and focus to the mind.
- Physical Dysfunctions: Blockage at this level can lead to depression, lack of spiritual direction and chronic exhaustion. Some schools of thought say that it can cause nervous disorders such as paralysis, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease. Other schools say that such disorders are associated with the brow chakra and the pituitary gland.
