Shabbat Shalom D'var Torah
by Leah Savage, Upper School Judaic Studies Teacher

It is a well known concept that the month of Adar is the national Jewish month of happiness. The Talmud in Massechet Taanit (29a) teaches the famous line of "Mi Shenichnas Adar Marbim Besimcha," meaning "When Adar begins, we increase in joy."

Part of the joy of Adar comes from our salvation from the evil scheme of Haman, who descended from our arch nemesis Amalek; however there is another reason for our celebration.

The Talmud in Shabbos (88a) teaches that Purim commemorates the reaffirmation of the Jewish people's acceptance of the Torah on an even higher level than when we accepted it on Mt. Sinai. This is because at the time of the revelation at Sinai, a Medrash states, G-d lifted Mt. Sinai over our heads and forced us into accepting the Torah. If we did not accept, G-d would have no further purpose for us, and under the mountain we would have perished. The Talmud continues to teach that from this Medrash, we see that the Jews accepted the Torah under duress, they were coerced - meaning that future generations would have a potential excuse for not keeping the Torah.

Nevertheless the Talmud concludes that in the days of Achashverosh the Jews reaccepted the Torah out of great love for Hashem. Thus, the joy of the month of Adar in general and more specifically the holiday of Purim, has the tremendously special joy of remembering our reaaceptance of the the Torah and affirming our connection to G-d.

What could be more joyous than this?
