Message from our Pastor

Studies show that Advent is a time when folk think about going to church. Maybe it's because for the church this is the beginning of the year. Maybe the coming of Christmas makes them think beyond just Christmas Eve. For whatever reason, this is an ideal time to invite a friend or neighbor. Who do you know who would be open to an invitation to come to church? Maybe it's an old member who hasn't been here for a while. Begin with prayer: God, help me to see who would like this invitation and open them to accept it. Then invite them, offer to pick them up, meet them, sit with them.

As you make your own plans for Christmas, we have three services planned for Sunday, December 24. There will a regular worship service in the morning at 10:00 am, then at 4:00 in the afternoon we will have a service designed especially for children and their parents. Rather than a formally rehearsed children's pageant, the children in attendance will be recruited to take various parts. A formal service of lessons and Carols, with choirs, will be offered at 7:00 pm. Come to one, come to all. Join us in celebrating Christ's birth.

NLP
Stewardship

The Stewardship Campaign for 2018 has come to an end and I would like to thank everyone for their participation in this critical event. The final figures that I will present to Session are... $391,306 pledged toward the 2018 operating (general) fund of the church from 95 pledge cards. This is just $64,399 short of the projected operating expenses for 2018. I am very pleased with the level of participation and the willingness to accept a different way in which we are projecting our income. This will help tremendously as Session works during December toward developing a balanced budget for 2018. Please know that pledge cards are welcomed and encouraged at any time throughout the year. Additionally, please know that unpledged offerings are certainly encouraged and gratefully received as I know that there are many who might not have been in a position to make a pledge during the campaign. Unpledged offerings will be one of the sources of income to make up the difference between that amount pledged to date and the projected expenses for 2018.  As a reminder, in addition to the end of year statement of financial giving which has traditionally been provided to each member, those who provided a pledge card will be receiving quarterly statements of giving throughout the year for your records. I know that your support for our church ministries has come from a profound sense of gratitude and joy for all you receive through your relationship with God and the members of our church.

Christmas Poinsettias .. deadline to order is Monday, December 4

We will once again be ordering red or white poinsettias to enhance the beauty of our sanctuary during Advent. Plan to give a poinsettia in honor or in memory of a loved one. Envelopes are in the pews, Narthex and outside the church office.

Because of the timing of Christmas, we will only have two weeks to order these.

Happy Hearts Luncheon

Plan to join us for our next Happy Hearts Luncheon-on Thursday, December 14 at 11:30 am in the Genesis Room. The entertainment will be provided by Patterson Mill High School's Acapela Group.
Adult Sunday School

November 26 - December 17

The Journey - Walking the Road to Bethlehem
Facilitator: Sam Polack,   spolack@hcpss.org

Please join us for a four-week Adult Sunday School class which will be based on the book The Journey - Walking the Road to Bethlehem by Adam Hamilton. You do not need to purchase the book to participate in the class. If you are interested, there is a link below. We will be using the 2011 hard cover version.

Our classes will be built around video segments in a DVD that accompanies the book. Each week there will be a short overview of the chapter, some pre-video thoughts (things to think about while watching), viewing the video segment, and a handful or so of follow-up discussion questions. The class is designed to coincide with the advent season and help us prepare for the coming of the Lord. There will not be an introduction week. On 11/26, we will jump right into a discussion of chapter one. Please bring your background experience and wisdom to add to our discussions.

Fifteen Minutes for Haiti

The "Experience Haiti" item in our last two Disciple newsletters stated that a brief  informational meeting was forthcoming. Therefore, for any & all interested folks, young and  old, we will gather in the Library immediately following worship on  Sunday, December 10.

"Experience Haiti" is an 8-day cultural excursion.  We will be:  visiting our Christian  friends, their churches, schools & ministries: and, learning first hand the needs of this  near-by, Caribbean country.

Partners in Care

On Veterans' Sunday, November 12th, we, once again, presented 10 $50 Giant Foods gift cards to be used by those families having been identified in need by the Chaplain's Office. We provided additional support by delivering 50 of our Giving Boxes and turkeys to the Maryland National Guard. Chaplain (Colonel) Sean Lee, the Joint Forces Headquarters Chaplain extended his appreciation to our congregation by presenting us with a certificate of appreciation signed by the Maryland National Guard Adjutant General, Major General (MD) Linda Singh. I want to thank you for your generous support of this ministry of Christ Our King Church.
